June 28, 1892 Greenville, S.C., June 20.--L. Washington Hipps, an old man about sixty years of age, was foully murdered by his son-in-law, J. W. J. Morgan, in Glassy mountain township, of this county, on Saturday last. Morgan married a daughter of Mr. Hipps some years ago. Another younger daughter has been living with Morgan and her sister. Recently this younger daughter gave birth to a child and confessed that Morgan was its father. Mr. Hipps felt the disgrace keenly and endeavored to have Morgan punished. He also carried his daughter home with him, much against Morgan's wishes. Morgan went to Mr. Hipps's home on Saturday last, and after trying in vain to persuade the girl to go back home with him, he went into the field adjoining and shot Mr. Hipps in the back with a load of buckshot from the gun he had with him, killing him instantly. After shooting their father he went back to the house and told two of Mr. Hipps's daugthers what he had done, adding that he expected to hang for it. He then fled to the mountains, where he is supposed to be now. This makes the fourth homicide in the county within two weeks.
