Greenville Mountaineer, August 7, 1846
Died at his residence on Peter’s Creek in the lower part of Greenville District,
after 17 days of severe suffering which he bore with Christian fortitude, Mr.
Abraham Smith, aged 66 years.  The deceased was an excellent farmer and by
industry and economy made a handsome property.  He was kind and liberal to the
industrious poor, frequently refusing money for grain and letting the needy have
it on time at a low price.  In fact, his crib was looked upon as a last resort
for those who could get bread nowhere else.  He was a great reader of the Bible,
and a very moral, upright man.  Although he had not attached himself to any
Church, he expressed a decided hope of meeting his Saviour in peace.  He had
left a widow, four children, and many grandchildren together with a large
connection and friends to lament his loss.
