My gr gr grandmother was Mary Louisa Southern who married Joshua Nelson. She first appears on a census by name as a married woman in 1850 living next door to widow Sarah Southern with Gipson Southern s young family adjacent. Here s the will: State of South Carolina Greenville County In the name of God. Amen. I, Gipson Southern of the County and State aforesaid do make this my last will and testament&. 1st. I direct my debts and funeral expenses to be first paid by my Executor and Executrix & 2nd. I will ..out my beloved wife, Nancy Gibson the use, benefit and enjoyment of my tract of land containing one hundred and sixty acres more or less during her widowhood and no longer in lien of her dower in my real property. 3rd. When the termination of the widowhood of my said wife Nancy the aforesaid tract of land shall be divided into two tracts or parcels by a line commencing on a Black Oak and running thence to a White Oak thence to a Rock corner at the head of a Hollow thence down said Hollow to a Branch to a Pine Corner thence to another Pine Corner thence to the ford of Enoree River. 4th. I will and devise unto my son, William Southern for and during his natural life. That portion of my said tract of land on which he now resides upon the termination of the widowhood my wife, Nancy Southern&.. 5th. The parcel or tract of land devised by me in the 4th paragraph of this my will to my son William during his natural life, I will and desire at his death to his children living at his death&. 6th. I will and devise unto my daughter, Sarah Jane Southern, on the termination of the widowhood of my wife Nancy that parcel or portion of my land on which I now reside for and during her natural life only. &. 7th. At the death of my said daughter Sarah Jane I will and devise this parcel or tract of land devised to her for and during her natural life to the children of my two sons George W. Southern and John L. Southern living at the death of my said daughter. &. 8th. I direct that my personal property be sold &as soon after my death as they can conveniently do so and after paying my debts and funeral expenses they turn over the balance of the proceeds of such sale to my two sons George W. Southern and John L. Southern & 9th. I constitute and appoint my daughter, Sarah Jane Southern, Executrix and my son, William Southern, Executor of this& (signed ) the 5th day of November A.D. 1888 Gipson Southern (he made his mark as signature) Recorded in Will Book G. p. 590 Witnessed by John R. Bellinger, John Ferguson, John W. Stokes Probated 27th day of June 1896. Signed. W.P. Southern, Jane Southern Recorded Will Book G. p. 594 Petition to prove the will records that Gipson Southern departed this life 19 June 1896 and owned $150 and real estate. The land was devised and bequeathed to Nancy Southern, W.P. Southern and Sarah Jane Southern containing 160 acres. The land was bordered on the north by property of Henry Crowder, Pinckney Hood and Dr. James Nesbitt. On the south by lands of Mrs. Theresa Gibson. On the east by lands of Alfred Taylor and &.Hill. On the west by lands of E.P. Raines.
