Mungo Sept 2000 ---------------------------------------- ARCHIBALD DOUGLASS CEMETERY - GREENWOOD COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA About half way between Hwy. 221 and Hwy. 10, and about 1 1/2 miles north of Bradley, SC, lies the graveyard of the Archibald Douglass family. It is located way back in the woods. The cemetery can be reached from Hwy. 221. If you're going from Greenwood, SC, turn to the right on Richey Road. Mr. Richey, who lives in the last house on the right on this dirt road, kindly allowed us to park (out of the way) in his yard. Cross the fence beside his house, turn right and follow it to the next fence and then turn left for approximately twenty five yards or so. The graveyard is on the right across that fence and the tombstones can be seen. I have been back, leaving a note on my car stating who I was and what I was doing there. I visited this cemetery on 14 Nov 1999 and all of the stones were in good condition... probably due to the fact that it was so isolated! These are the inscriptions on the tombstones: to / the Memory of / Archibald Douglass / who was born March 10th 1770 / and departed this life / March 27, 1815 / has left a wife and six / children to lament the loss / of an affectionate husband / and tender parent. / Sacred / to the Memory / of / Mrs. Elizabeth Douglas / who departed this life on / the 27th day of Sept. 1809 / Aged 33 years. / [some have said that her name was M. Elizabeth Douglas on the tombstone, but I checked closely and it is Mrs. Elizabeth Douglas] Sacred / to the memory of / William Adams, / who was born / January 12th 1818 / and departed this life / September 19th 1858 / In Memory / of / Agnes D. Adams / Born Jan 28, 1831 / Died August 8, 1853 / In Memory of / Margaret M. Gray, / Born Jan 28th 1831 / Died Oct 21st 1849 / Sacred / to the memory / of David J. Weems / Born June 3rd 1824 / Died September 5th, 1844 / Sacred / to the memory of / George Red / Born March 1773 / and departed this life / 16th of Sept 1840 / Aged 67 years & 6 mons. / [foot stone G.R.] J. W. D. / de. this / Li A 17 1810 / In / Memory of / Mary A. R. Gray / Born 10th Jan 1842 / Died 10th May 1844 / [foot stone M.A.R.G.] In Memory of / Jane A. Gray / Born March 2nd 1844 / Died Oct 14th 1847 / In memory of / Mary I. J. Gray / wife of A. L. Gray / and daughter of James and Jane McWilliams / Born Dec. 2nd 1822 / Died Apr. 12th 1858 / [foot stone M. I. J. G.] F. Sproull / J. P. C. Sproull / Oct. 4 1836 / R. C. Sproull / There were several tombstones that had sunken so far into the ground that only the names could be read. There were other rocks that were at lots of sunken places, so I am sure that these were graves also but no stones could be found. Referencing the book "Tombstone Inscriptions From Family Graveyards in Greenwood County, SC" by Margaret and Louise Watson, the tombstone of Mary I. J. Gray was on the ground and broken in the early 1960s and could not be found in September 1971. We found this tombstone, in November 1999, lying face down and under a thick covering of leaves. **************************************************************** USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by any other organization or persons.
