J.B. HUGHEY DIES SUDDENLY Former Greenwood Physician Passes From Heart Attack Dr. James B. Hughey, for many years a leading physician and highly esteemed citizen of Greenwood, died at the home of his daughter Mrs. E. D. Byrd, at Kingstree last night at two o'clock of a heart attack. He had been in his usual health, but became suddenly ill at midnight. Dr. Hughey was in his 74th year. He was born October 25, 1861 in Newberry county, the son of Joseph L. Hughey and Sarah Duncan Hughey. His early education was received in the old Male Academy in Greenwood and later he attended Furman University, going from therer to the Medical College of Charleston and receiving his degree at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dr. Hughey began the practice of medicine in Greenwood with the late Dr. John C. Maxwell and continued in his profession here until 1916 when he removed to Gaffney where he practiced for about 15 years. He located at Kingstree four years ago. As a physician Dr. Hughey was very successful and as a public spirited citizen he did much for the upbuilding of Greenwood. He was one of the first members of the Greenwood Watr and Light Commission, a charter member of South Main Street Baptist church, physician for Connie Maxwell Orphanage for a number of years, and an active Mason, having served as worshipful master of Greenwood Lodge and eminent commander of the Commandery here, being a Knight Templar and Shriner. Dr. Hughey was married on January 7, 1885 to Lucia Lynwood Tarrant. The surviving children of this union are: Robert D. Hughey, Yonge's Island; Mrs Herbert A. Anderson, Greenwood; Mrs Robert F. Curry, Greenville; Mrs Wade C. Harrison, Bradley; Mrs. L. D. Wells, Holly Hill; and J. Wilmot Hughey, Greenwood. His second marriage was to Miss Bessie Yarborough who survives him with the following children: Mrs. E. D. Byrd, Kingstree, and James B. Hughey and John P. Hughey of the United States Navy now in foreign service. He also is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Sallie H. Seal, Mrs. Joel P. Burnett and Mrs. A. H. Woodle, Greenwood and one brother J. D. Hughey, St. George. The funeral services will be conducted at South Main Street Baptist church Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock by Dr. A. T. Jamison and the Rev. Walter Lee Coker and interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery. The funeral party will arrive here from Kingstree at 2:45. The following will serve as pallbearers: Active - R. B. Curry, C. C.
