Death of R. D. Best

This Holy man of God was born in Columbus County, N. C., April 18th, 1830 and 
died April 15th, 1900. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church about 
fifty years joined the Pleasant Plane Church, N.C. He then moved to 
Springfield, S. C, in 1897, leading in the constitution of the last named 
church. During this time, he helped to build four churches viz. Pleasant Hill 
$27, Springfield 450, Pleasant Plane $65. He has been an ordained Deacon about 
46 years.

This devoted Christian married Mrs. Dorcas Gore, of a family noted for piety 
and Christianity. He leaves a wife, one son, and four daughters, on the 
highest place of Christianity, to mourn his departure.

A short while before he died he selected the place in the cemetery of his 
church to be buried. The Pastor of his Church (D. M. Edge) told the writer, at 
the last meeting of his church on earth, he was filled with the Holy Spirit of 
God to the overflowing and shouts of praise. He was very kind, cheerful, and 
benevolent to everybody. His pastor now has a hymn book and a year’s 
subscription to the “S. C. Baptist” as souvenirs, presented by him a short 
while before his death. The young ministers and converts were cheered and 
encouraged continuality by him. Especially in their weakest efforts to serve 
God. He was a great lover of children and the S. S. Cause. Uncle Best has 
clasped hands with friends and relatives on the other shore and awaits our 
coming. The Lord help us to be as true and faithful as he was.
