C., Dec. 7, 1893, Mr. Petaway Cartrette, aged about 76 years. He had been sick for several days, but being able to sit up and walk about, his death was not expected so suddenly. While he was sitting by the fireside talking with some of his children, the messenger of death came and called him away. His loving companion and dear children, who only a few moments before entertained strong hops of this ultimate recovery, were stricken with sorrow at the sad bereavement. Mr. Cartrette was held in high esteem by all who knew hem. He was a good man of sound character and good judgment, cheerful and full of public spirit. His counsel and assistance were never sought in vain by his neighbors when in need or distress. These could ever rely upon his kindness and generosity. He had been a member of the Methodist Church for 50 years and, at the time of his death was a trustee of the Poplar Church. Surely in the death of Mr. Cartrette we feel in the community we have lost one of our best men-one, whose place it will be hard indeed to fill. But we bow in submission to the will of God and are thankful for his being spared so long to do good among us. He leaves an aged wife with who he aged in happiness for 51 years. Several children and grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn, with her, his loss. May the Lord sustain the aged widow and surviving children under this sad dispensation of Providence; for “God is our refuge and strength and a present help in time of trouble.” Dearest Brother, thou hast left us. Here thy loss we deeply feel, But ‘tis God who hath breft us; He can all our sorrows heal. D. D.A.
