J. L. B. Hucks Rev. J. L. B. Hucks of Socastee after an illness of seven days, died at his residence at 3:50 a.m., Sunday February 7th, about fifty three years of age. Brother Hucks was a devoted Christian, having joined the M. E. Church South when quite a boy and soon after made a profession of religion, but sometime before the breaking out of the war claimed to have lost his first love and passed through that trying ordeal in that condition as a private solider in Lee’s army, making many promises, that if God would carry him through safe, that he would serve Him the remainder of days. He professes to be reclaimed at a revival meeting held at Socastee by Rev. H. P. S. Ewell, not many years after the war and so kept his promise remaining a faithful solider of the cross to the end, serving in all of the official capacities of his church; until he reached the position of local preacher which proved the most useful and eventful part of his life being a great worker in revival meetings. Becoming dissatisfied with polity of his church towards their local preachers, he cast about the relief, which he found in the Methodist Protestant Church and obtaining a certificate of membership and united with the M. P. Church serving faithfully whenever called upon. Brother Hucks was a good citizen a devoted Christian and always found in the front ranks, battling for the truth. He left the brightest testimony a precious legacy to those who mourn after him saying that all was bright beyond. The deceased leaves a wife, eight children, and many relatives and friends. J. N.
