Evan Norton, M.D., passed away from this life at his residence in this town, just before the hour of 4 o’clock on Tuesday, morning July 21st, 1914. Doctor Norton had been lingering from which he suffered the first attack I the Spring of this year. The best physicians in this State were consulted about his condition which grew worse from time to time, and for several days before his death, the end had appeared to be near. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Daisy Crouch, of Saluda, S.C., and Miss Mabel Norton, of Conway, and his three sons, Dr. J. A. Norton and J. O. Norton, Esq., and J Clarence Norton, of Memphis, Tenn. His wife preceded him to the grave by several years. Horry County never sustained a more distinct loss by death of a man. His death occurred in the seventy-third year of his life. For nearly half a century Evan Norton was identified with nearly everything relating to Horry County and her people, that could be said to tend toward the up-building, growth and prosperity of the people spiritually and intellectually. He was a good man in every sense of the word. When he was editor of this paper, which he established and edited for many years following 1886, his motto as printed on the title page was: “Be true to your word and your work and your country.” He lived up to this. As a physician he gained the confidence of every person he treated. They had faith in his ability. They believed what he said. His name became a household word through every part of this County. As editor of the county paper, trustee of the school, as a public servant, and in every walk of life he distinguished himself as a servant of the people and he found no greater pleasure in life than this. He was indeed true to his word and his work and his country. When he died last Tuesday morning the whole people felt the blow. Evan Norton made his mark among them as a kind father would among his children. Everybody knew him and him through his work. As the readers of his paper see these lines there can hardly be a single on who will not feel their hearts sadden. Evan Norton was born on September 9,th A.D., 1841 near Mullins in Marion County. As a young man he served the four years in the war between the Sates. In the year 1868 he graduated in medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, of Baltimore. Md. He taught school in Floyds township in this County in the year 1870 and the following year located at Conway in the practice of his profession. He was elected as county auditor of Horry County and served in capacity from 1876 to 1886. He established the Horry Herald in the year 1886 and was the editor of that paper from that time until the year 1896 when the paper was old to E. W. Nolley and his associates. When he established himself in the medical profession in Conway, he also became engaged in the drug business, and for a long number of years he was the owner of the only drug store in the county. Through he preformed other arduous duties as this short and incomplete sketch of his life shows; his practice as a physician and the drug business; and he paid close attention to these until his health failed last Spring. He took and active part in planning and making ready for the erection of the handsome new drug store and office building on Main Street, where for many years the drug business has been incorporated under the charter name of the Norton Drug Co. For forty-two years of his life he was the superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School, besides holding other active positions of teacher from time to time; but his position of superintendent was unbroken and no man ever rendered more steady and heartfelt service in the cause of the master than Dr. Norton did in this. When he first located here he was a member of the County Board of Medical Examiners before the State Board had been established. For many years past he was the dean of the medical profession in Horry County. He was the first president of the Horry County Medical Society. Several times he was reelected. In early manhood he married Miss Ellen Powell, of Fair Bluff, N.C. She preceded him to the grave only a few years. At her death his grief was intense, and from it he perhaps never fully recovered. Soon after the establishment of the Burroughs School he was elected as a trustee and he held this positions of honor and trust that he held from time to time. He filled them not for the profits they brought, but for the profits they brought, but for the good he might accomplish therein. He was identified at all time with every movement tending toward the advancement of his community. He stood for all that was best in both church and State and in the performance of his duty he was never know to falter. His record, a long life time of duty and service, is an open book to every man and woman of this section of the state and not only the men and women who have lived and knew him in the past. The funeral services were commenced at the new Methodist Church, with the building which the deceased member had so much to do, and they were concluded at the grave, at Lakeside cemetery. The services were conducted by the Rev. A. D. Betts, pastor of the church. Mr. Betts was away on vacation but arrived in time to officiate at the last rites over the remains of one of his most honored members. The pallbearers were Hon. Hal L. Buck, Messrs. Paul Quattlebaum, A. B. McCoy, B. T. Hyman, P. W. Bethea, D. A. Spivey, Honorary: F. A. Burroughs, R. B. Scarborough, D. T. McNeill, Dr. J. S. Dusenbury, and J. A. McDermott. There were member of people from out of town.
