J. Singleton On last Monday, the 23rd inst., a throng of sorrowing friends gathered at Collins Creek cemetery to see the body of W. J. Singleton returned to earth from whence it came. Bad health and despondency had overtaken him some two years ago, and for the most of his time, he had been almost helpless, and at times his mind was bad. The end was not unexpected. Services were conducted by Rev. Bedenbough of Murrells Inlet. The church and grounds were filled to capacity but the crowd was no index to the scope of his friends. His pall bearers were J. E. Bryan, Jerry Cox, W. A. Freeman, W. S. McCaskill, S. P. Hawes, and J. H. Marsh. His chief interests were saw milling and farming. His broad acres were the community experiment station. He was a close observer and watched every movement of his plants and animals never forgetting anything in his life. In his line he was a wise man. Frank Burroughs said that he was born with making of a great man. Jas. Henry Rice, Jr., said “the world never paid Bill Singleton what it owed him.” He made fortunes but the latch strings to his store and his home hung on the outside to all who were in need, and so, when he went away. He was twice married and was the devoted father of several children. He was a member of the Collins Creek Baptist Church and seemed to find great pleasure in assuring friends at this bedside that all was well beyond the crossing. All sympathy ghost out to the bereaved widow and children. His Friend McC.
