Smith was born in Newberry S. C., in July 1842, and died at Conway, S. C., November 14, 1910. Mrs. Smith was married three times. At the age of about 15 years at her girlhood home, she was married to Mr. Jacob Long. To this union one child was born. The other two marriages were childless. She came to Conway in January 1881 to live with her daughter Mrs. E. M. Ogilvie and some several years after she married Mr. Henry Hardee. After his death, who together with her only child, Mrs. Ogilvie, five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren, survive her. Her long residence in Conway, her lovely character and her kindness of heart, won for her a large circle of warm friends and the esteem and respect of the entire community. Her ears were never closed to the appeals of the suffering and afflicted, and her hand and heart were ever ready to respond to the call of humanity. When the news of her death was announced last Monday morning at 9 o’clock it was received with profound sorrow and genuine regret by the entire community and friend hastened to the assistance of the bereaved family with offers to help and words to sympathy and comfort. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church, of which she was a member, of Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the presence of relatives and friends, and were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. G. E. Edwards, assisted by Rev. A. S. Doak, pastor of the Presbyterian church, the impressive and beautiful burial service of the Methodist church being used. The following were the pall bears: J. A. Lewis L.H. Burroughs Geo. F. Nissen M. W. Cook L. B. Singleton Charley Marsh Paul Quattlebaum John Holt All of whom at one time of another boarded with her. The interment was in Lakeside Cemetery, the floral offerings being numerous and beautiful. The sympathies of the Herald go out to the stricken Husband and bereaved family.
