Mr. Thompson was a Confederate Veteran having entered Confederate service at the beginning of “the bloody struggle” and faithfully following the Confederate flay until the surrender of Lee’s Army at Appomattox. Being the eldest son of Rev. John R. and Mrs. Clarkey Thompson he was brought up under Christian influence and obeying the injunction to “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth,” he united with Poplar M. E. church early in life and remained a faithful and consistent of the same until his death. His doors were always open to all ministers of the Gospel regardless of denomination, and many who have enjoyed his hospitality, sympathize with him in his painful affliction, and joined their prayers with his for his recovery but God knew best, and His will hath been done. Mr. Thompson married Miss Margarett Ludlam, and she with many friends and acquaintances survive him, and mourn his loss. But while we mourn, it isnot as those who have no hope, for of him it might truly be said he “lived the life of the righteous and died the same.” Although he had none of his own he was very fond of children, and many of the little ones of the community will long remember “Uncle Nassa” and their visits to his home, the apples and peanuts they ate together and the beautiful stories he told them, will ever occupy a prominent place in their “fond recollections” of childhood days. His remains now rest in the old family grave yard, near where most of his life was spent. A Friend.
