[Peter II-4, Peter I-3, Matthias Sr.-2, John-1.] It was sent to me recently by a cousin. The year 1897 was hand written on the paper. The problem is that neither the date, name of city nor the name of the newspaper is mentioned. I have seen statements that Peter Vaught died while visiting his daughter in Illinois, but never any proof. I knew that my Grandmother, Mrs. Robert Roach [Anna Elida Vaught] mentioned in the obituary was living in Atlanta, Logan Co., Illinois at the time. I requested microfilm copies of the Atlanta Argus [The newspaper in Atlanta at that time] from the Illinois State Historical Library. The following articles appeared: October 1, 1897 - Mr. Peter Vaught is here from South Carolina, visiting with his daughter, Mrs. Robert Roach. November 12, 1897 - Dr. Peter Vaught is very ill at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Roach, in this city. His ailment is Bright's disease and it is not thought that he will recover. Mr. Vaught came here a few weeks ago from South Carolina. A search of the Tuttle Funeral Home records show an entry for "Dr. Voit, November 24, 1897." I think that the above information gives strong support as to the time and place of death of Peter Vaught. Obituary Died.--- Mr. Peter Vaught, M.D., died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Roach in this city, last Wednesday, of Bright's disease, after an illness of three weeks. The Doctor was born in Horry county, South Carolina, Dec. 2, 1824, being nearly 73 years old at the time of his death. He was one of the men who were loyal to their state, a true southerner. Before the war, he owned a large number of slaves, and while not a voter for secession, he served on a gunboat for a time in the service of the south. He came to visit his daughter Sept. 27, with whom his last hours were spent. He was a member of M.E. Church South for over forty years. Burial this (Friday) morning in the Roach cemetery, members of the G. A. R. acting as pall bearers. The funeral services will be conducted by Pastor F.M. Smith.
