Will of Richard GRIFFIN

State South Carolina
Laurens District

I Richard Griffin of the State and Diftrict aford. At this time prefect in 
mind and memory and Calling to mind the mortallity of my body, and as God has 
blefsd. me with Sundries of the Things of this life, I think best to make and 
Constitute this my last will and Testament in manner and form following hereby 
Revoking and annulling all former Wills by me made or done in any manner or 
form whatever and Now

first I leave to my beloved Wife Ellinor Griffin one Tract of Land of one 
hundred and fifty acres which I Purchased of William Day formerly Chapples 
also fifty acres I purchased of William Ball Senr also a peice Taken off the 
South Side of the tract I bought of Peter Ball which I Suppose may Contain 
about thirty five acres So as to include my Present Dwelling house and all 
other houses, beginning up Cane Creek at the upper Corner of land of land I 
bought of William Ball as above, from a white oake which I now make markd 3”x 
thence a Strait line to Strike the lower Edge of the old Field cleared by 
Peter Ball thence on to the line of the land I bought of Mary Johnson to a Red 
Oake I markd. 3#X and sd. line all and giving part I leave as above to be the 
Same lands mor or lefs other Defscriptions of Sd. Land may be Seen by 
Reffirrinces to their plats.

Also I leave to my beloved Wife as aford. one Negro boy named Ifsaac & one 
Negro girl named Joanna Two good fether beds and furniture and one good mare 
and colt Sadle & bridle Two Cows & Calves half Dozen Sheep Two Sowes and pigs 
then half my household and kitching furniture (it is to be understood that 
this is to have no Claim on anybody but the Two I mention) one Cubbord one 
Walnut Chest two hoes one plough one asc one grubing hoe with the Requisite 
geers to work sd. plough and also a Sufficency of Comportable provision to 
Support the whole as above for one year—

Now is consider that after my Sd. Wife as above Revives the above articles as 
mentioned, according to the time intent and meaning hereof, that She is to 
Relinquish all Claim on any other part that may Remain, now on This Remainder 
(After Recomending my Soul to the gardian Care of heaven) my body is to be

Debts I order that it be Sold on a Credit of Twelve months by my Execurtors 
hereafter named and then Equally Devided between my Children or the heirs of 
their body, I Shall name by Trusty Friends James Caldwell & Charles Griffin of 
Newberry Diftrict to Execute this my last Will and testament in Witnifs 
whereof I have here unto Set my hand and Seall in the year of our Lord one

“State of So Carolina
Laurens District

Whereas I Richard Griffin Senr. of the State and District aforesaid did sum 
time since Entermary with Elinor McClain Now my present wife and Whereas I 
have made my Will and Testament Berring date the Second day of Febury in the 
year of our Lord one thousand Eaight hundred & five Wich Will She acknowledges 
is interely to her Sattiffaction Wherein I have given and Bequathed to here my 
Sd. Wife Eliner the following tract of Land and other property to her & her 
Heirs and Afsigns forever (Viz) 

one tract of one hundred and fifty acres more or Lefs Wich I purchased from 
William Day called Chappels tract on Seluday River at the Mouth of Cane Creek 

one tract of fifty acres adjoining thereto wich I purchased of Wm. Ball 

one tract of thirty five acres Joining thareto Being part of a tract Purchased 
of Peter Ball Whereon I now live this thirty five acres is discribed in the 
titles I made to Washington Williams this day for the Ballance of Said Balls 
tract adjoining on other tract on the River I have likeweise Given to My Said 
Wife Elinar the following personal property 

(Viz) two negros Jonah & Isaac (as the) two cowes & calves two Good Feather 
Beds and furniture Six head of Sheep one mare and Colt & Saddle & Bridle two 
sowes and pighs one equal half of My household and kitchen furniture (Except

one plow and geers togather the one Eaight part of My Crop of Every kind wich 
Shall or may belonging on my Land at the time of my death to be considred as 
one years mintainance after My Death Should She My Wife be then Living &C) in

Exclusive of her Self all her Right and title Clame and Demand for Ever to all 
the Rest and Remaining of My Estate Boath Real and personal of Every kind and 
Nature Whatever be the Same what it may Accept Such part and persal whareof is 
Before mintioned as being Given to her My said wife in Consideration of her 
Said Relinquisment and the tender Love I have and Estem To for her My said

I, Jacob R. Brown ^ [words hand written: ‘Justice of the…’] Quarum do hereby 
certify Unto all Whome it may Concerne that Eliner Griffin the Wife of the 
above named Richard Griffin did this day appeare before Me and Upon being 
privitly & Repeartly Ecominoned by the Me did declare that She (in 
consideration of the above Mintioned Will being Made and fuley carried into 
Effect after her husbands Death and the above inclosed Instrument provided the 
Same Shall be fulley complyed With and Shee allowed to keep and Enjoy the 
property (therein Set forth) Does freely Voluntary and without any Compulsion 
Dread or feare Of any person or persons Whomesoever Renounce Release and 
forever Relinquish Unto the Heirs and Afsigns of her husband Richard Griffin 
all her Intrest and Estate and slso all her Right and Clame to any and Every 
part of his Estate Either Real or personal wich he Now has or may heareafter 
be posed of be the Same of Lands Moneys Goods or Chattles the Same to be and 
Belong to his Children Grand Children or thare Afsigns Except the Land and 
property above Mintioned and given to her in testimoney whareof I have

Richard GRIFFIN, born 04 Feb 1734 WALES died 25 October 1805, Laurens 
District, South Carolina and is believed to have been son of Welshman John 
GRIFFIN, 1690(1708)-1743 and his wife, [Margaret] Edna GOOD / GOODE.  

Richard GRIFFIN married twice, first to Nancy Anne CLARK / CLARKE, 1739-1792, 
and second to Eleanor McCLAIN.  To his first marriage, seventeeen (17) known 
children were born.
