Contributed to The USGenWeb Archives by: Paula Naujalis (naujalis@wmis.net) Aug 01, 1999 ---------------------------------------- National Archives #26200 State of South Carolina Greenville District On this ___ day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty two, personally appeared in open court before Richard Bassett? a judge of the Court of Common Pleas and General Justice of the Peace, now saith Lewis Land a resident citizen of the State of South Carolina in the District Greenville aforesaid aged seventy years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the Act of Congress passed the seventh day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty two. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers, and served as herein stated. That in the month of January in the year 1776 he enlisted under Capt. Walter Vowalls in the first regiment of the Virginia State Troops commanded by Major Merryweather and Col. Brant and Col. George Gibson in Orange County in the State of Virginia for the time of three years and to Williamsburg, Virginia where Capt. Vowalls took the small pox returned home and died; then Capt. Lee succeeded him in the command then proceeded to Atlanta where the regiment had the small pox. After its recovery, marched and joined the main army at the White Marsh Camps. Capt. Lee was then promoted to the rank and command of Major and Capt. William Haufler succeeded to the command, and marched the troops to winter quarters at Valley Forge on the Schulkyll River. That he was an active soldier for three years and in the year 1799 was engaged in the taking of the Stony Point Fork on the fifteenth of July by General Waynes' Army; and in the August following he was in the battle of Monmouth. And in the year 1779 he was discharged by Col. George Gibson at Fredericktown in the State of Maryland having completed his three year service. That he has no documentary evidence of his said service, and that he knows of no person whose testimony he can conveniently procure who can testify to the _____ of the foregoing declaration other than that herewith submitted. And the said Lewis Land hereby relinquishes any claim ____ to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension rolls of the agency of any state. McDaniel CCP ***** National Archives #26200 State of South Carolina Greenville District Personally appears Obedience Lands before me Robert McKay, judge of the Court of Ordinary for the district and state aforesaid and being duly sworn makes before the following declaration in order to obtain her pension under the Act of Congress allowing pensions to the widows of Revolutionary soldiers. The said Obedience Lands states that she is the widow of Lewis Lands who was a soldier of the Revolutionary War and at his death a Revolutionary pensioner at the amount of eighty dollars per annum, and that said Lewis Lands died in Greenville District and state aforesaid on the 28th day of July 1854 last in which district and state he had resided many years previous to his death. That she married said Lewis Lands on the 27th day of August 1842 by one Rev. Isaac Lemons? since deceased. The ceremony was performed but no record was made. That her name previous to the marriage was Obedience West. That she still remains a widow and unmarried. The fact of her marriage and death of her husband said Lewis Lands and that she still remains a widow is proved by _____ _____ submitted. The said Obedience Land also states that she is entitled to the arrears of pension due to the deceased husband which was unpaid at his death.
