He entered the service of his State in April of the same year and in May nobly volunteered his services in the defence of Virginia A soldier brave, obedient and faithful, he was always at his post. As a Patriot it is enough to say he was at Manassas, Williamsburg and Seven Pines. Here he laid his last & dearest offering upon the altar of his country, having received a wound in the leg he was carried to Richmond where he soon died. Let him rest in peace undisturbed by mortal sounds until the trump of God shall awake him to brighter honors & more lasting glories than those won upon the field of battle, and to a better country & happier home than that for which he contended here. We mourn his death, but not as those who have no hope, for we console our hearts with the hope of joining him in that happy land whose prospects were spread before him at the close of his life." 18.
