His death was reported by the hospital records as July 3, 1864. No records have been found as to his place of burial. By the date of his wound, and the fact that he was one of Major Dunlop's sharpshooters, Griffin was most likely mortally wounded at the Jerusalem Plank Road engagement south of Petersburg, Virginia.
