When the land was deeded to the church, the Brown's started burying their dead in a separate area in back of the church. The community of Wolf Stake first got its name back in the middle 1800s. Somewhere in the community, there was a trap used to catch wild wolves that would come down out of the mountains. It seems that this trap was a pit covered with limbs. As you know, the Eastern wolf is now extinct. The community first organized a church in the old Wolf Stake school building and met there for many years. In 1886, the people built their own church building on land donated by Mr. Manassey Galbreath. This building was erected where the present building now stands, only facing the opposite direction. Materials used for construction were hauled by ox driven wagons. In 1946, renovation and additional rooms were added. The late Reverend Jim Seaborn was the first pastor. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Mulkey, Mr. and Mrs. Lem Galbreath, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Prince, Mr. and Mrs. Knox and their children were the first members. The church joined with New Hope and Pleasant Ridge and worked together as a mission until 1951. On May 1, 1951, Mr. Cap Bryant, on his way home from work, discovered that the church was on fire, having been struck by lightning. The community rallied to the fire alarm, but only the piano, a heater, and nine pews could be saved. The tragedy left the people heartbroken. But determined to worship God, they made plans to use the Keowee school for a meeting place. On Sunday, May 13, 1951, the church appointed a building committee: M.V. Burton, W.C. Owen, and Elmer Chapman. The committee plus the church began working and fundraising activities to build a new church. On November 22, 1953, dedication services were held for the new church building. Pastor V.W. Prince brought the dedication message from Psalms 96:6. God has allowed many wonderful accomplishments at Wolf Stake Baptist Church. Many wonderful and Godly people have worked and worshipped over the many years of our church's existence. Our prayer today is that Wolf Stake Baptist will remain for many more years to come as a testimony to the community's love of God and people.
