Latitude N 34 47.489 x Longitude W 82 53.261 CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ The original cemetery was started in 1829, on land that was purchased from John Gresham by John Craig. It was located near the mouth of Mile Creek on the east side of the Keowee River. Because the construction of Lake Keowee was going to cause gravesite problems, the Duke Power Company agreed to move the cemetery. Current Craig family descendants decided on relocating the graves to the Duke Power Memorial, which is located in the Old Town of Pickens - near the C149 Old Pickens Presbyterian Church. The Old Town of Pickens was the court district seat of Pickens county, which Oconee county was part of in 1868. The New Town of Pickens is located 15 miles east. ---------- MANY OF THE CRAIG CHILDREN PROMINENT IN OCONEE AFFAIRS: SENECA - Although the Craig children, sons and daughters of William Speed Craig and Nancy Mahalah Allgood Craig, were born in Pickens County a number of them spent many years in Oconee and considered it home. The eldest, Cotesworth married Ida Welch, a resident of Seneca and later moved to Atlanta. Although Edward, the second, never lived in Oconee, several of his sons attended Seneca High School where they figured prominently in football and other sports. A daughter married Bill Keese of Oakway and made her home in Oconee. JOHN F. CRAIG spent most of his life in Walhalla. Rev. Clarence L. Craig, who was killed early in life, preached in the lower part of the county and served several terms as superintendent of education in Oconee. His son, Ernest, was a teacher in the county. James B. Craig, never a resident, was well known as the builder of Chapman's covered bridge over Keowee River. Robert A. is one of the two members of Oconee who made Oconee their home. He lived on the Oconee side of Keowee River across from the home place of his Revolutionary War ancestors, John N. Craig, and the place he grew up, near Craven Ford. He still has many friends in Oconee who enjoy his humor and friendly personality, and his experiences as a teacher in Long Creek and other one room schools in Oconee. Revolutionary War soldier at the age of 15. His first marriage was to a Miss dark who bore him a son, William H. on Dec. 13, 1785. His second marriage was to Catherine Wilson on Nov. 14, 1788. She bore him nine children. They lived on a 425 acre tract of land bordered on the west by Keowee River, about half way between the old Pickens and Nimmons bridges. He was buried in the Craig Cemetery, which has been moved because of the Duke Lake which will cover the area, to a plot adjacent to Old Pickens Church cemetery. He died Feb. 10, 1842 at the age of 81. By: Keowee Courier Newspaper JOHN CRAIG & wife Pearl B. Craig - 11 children ---------------------------------------------- 1. Stonewall Jackson Craig Jr 2. Some by request were moved to Sunrise at Pickens and John Gresham's body was not one of them so he removed in 1970. John Gresham: you may want to see addresses given at laying of memorial marker to him and Joseph Reed. Was published in issues Aug 7, 14, and 21 1935 Keowee Courier.
