The first building for worship was a small log house. The organization consisted of two preachers, Reverend Frank Morris, for whom Morris College, Sumter, SC is named, moderated the organization and Reverend James Keith (1866-1883), the first elected pastor of Flat Rock. *The Sixteen Charter members were: Brothers John Reid, Issac Brown, Pomey Henderson, Jackson Henderson, Green Cleveland, and Sisters Emily Brown, Mary Keith, Emily Cleveland, Mary Wright, Carrie Singleton, Marie White, Martha Henderson, Rhoda Henderson, Celie Williams, Caroline Pickens, and Alice Glover. Flat Rock became a member of the Rocky River Association of Anderson County. In 1878, due to the distance and time involved in traveling, Flat Rock, along with nine other churches, was granted letters of dismissal to form the Seneca River Missionary Baptist Association. On April 8, 1871, Mr. Diedrick Biemann conveyed one acre of land, for the sum of five ($5.00) dollars, to Messrs. Joel A. Beard, Abraham Taylor, and J.W. Stribling, as trustees, for the sole purpose to aid in the erection of a house of worship for the Baptist Denomination, and to open or permit to be opened, annexation of Catherine Street 30 feet wide running west to said lot, to be used and enjoyed by persons worshipping in the said church. Thus, a larger building was constructed for worship. After Seventeen years of faithful service, Reverend Keith answered the call to his heavenly home. His earthly remains are interred in the church cemetery. Another building for worship was erected in 1887. On July 22, 1899, Mr. R.T. Jaynes conveyed one-half acre at the fork of public road from Walhalla to Westminster, and the road from Walhalla to Flat Rock Colored Baptist Church, to trustees of Bear Swamp School District #72; Messrs. W.W. Burley, W.M. Cobb, and F.H. Brandt, for a school building and lot, to promote education in the community. The church acquired two and one-half more acres of land for $81.25 from Mr. W.C. Burnside, January 18, 1909, by trustees: Messrs. Phillip Mattison, S.E. Westfield, Thomas Singleton, Richard Hutchenson, and J.Q. Terry. A tower was erected and a church bell, which is still in use today, was purchased. The County Board of Education consolidated Coneross District #21, Brewer District #64, and Bear Swamp District #72 into one district known as Blue Ridge District #21. Mr. M. Abbott, et al Trustee of said district, conveyed the one- half acre school lot to Flat Rock Baptist Church Trustees on December 16, 1911. Leaders from all over the state came to conduct workshops. Flat Rock was initiated into the State and National Conventions, and construction of the Recreation Center, on the school house lot, at an approximate cost of $2,500.00, was completed in 1959. The church was moved from its original site to the present site, with the hope of expanding its facilities. The interior was renovated and restrooms added to the Recreation Center. In January 1973, the church was renovated; but the foundation erected in 1887 remained. During the complete renovation of the interior and exterior of the church in 1973, services were held at the Baptist Mission on Moore Avenue. Mortgage Burning and Cornerstone Laying Services were held on May 7, 1978, and on May 6, 1979 service was begun every Sunday instead of two Sundays a month. A burglar/fire alarm system was installed in December 1980. Annexation of a $35,000.00 Fellowship Hall was completed in 1983, a ramp for the handicapped constructed, and most recently, June 1991, the church sanctuary was renovated and carpeted. Fourteen ministers have served as pastor of Flat Rock since its organization: Reverends Frank Morris (1866-1883), A.B. Thompson (1883-1884), S.H. Oglesby (1884-1899), J.A. Watson (1899-1904), W.S. Southerland (1904-1909), L.W. Simpson (1909-1914), J.H. Walker (1914-1916), A.B. Morton (1916-1924), R.B. Steward (1924-1943), Robert B. Ayers (1943-1959), Rufus H. Mitchell (1959-1970), Horton H. Howard (1970-1972), Sidney H. Davis, Sr. (1972-1981), and Thomas L. Allen, Sr. (1981-present). *Spelling of names and places as taken from written records. Submitted by: Annette K. Burney, P.O.
