Originally organized as the Canaan Baptist Church in 1887, under the leadership of Reverend W.M. Thrner. At this time the Church School was organized and became an integral part of the church, The Church School at one time met in the afternoon. There are no written records of its early history. However, we do have records for the Church School beginning in the 1930's. Information before this time was passed on by word or mouth. We have records of eight superintendents: J.T. Thompson, Emory Barton, James Harrison Benson, Estella Sloan, Henry C. Dendy, and Roscoe R. Benson, who is present superintendent. There have been 15 teachers during the existence of the Sunday School. They include: Laura Thompson, Mollie Henderson, Lula E. Benson, Nettie Price, Margie Sorter, James Sloan, Edna S. Lawrence, Hazel Catchings, Naomi Sloan, Steward Lawrence, Drucilla Benson, Eather Benson, Mamie Benson, Millie Raines Harold Benson, and Margaret Benson. Church School secretaries included: Sara Sloan, Wilma Benson, Mary McKinney, Estella Sloan, and Geneva Robinson. Many others have served in various capacities of the Church School during its long history. The school has grown much in spirit, finance and membership through its existence. Classes are now held for Adults, Juniors, Intermediatres, Primaries, and Beginners. The present officers and teachers are giving dedicated service for the spreading of God's Word. o----------o Seneca River Baptist Association - 1982 NEW CANAAN BAPTIST CHURCH 91 Years of Continuous Progress New Canaan Baptist Church was founded as Canaan Baptist Church in the year of 1887 under the leadership of Reverend W. M. Turner. Approximately twelve members constituted Reverend Turner's congregation. The land on which this first small church was built was donated by a Lawyer Reed of Walhalla, S.C. The church started to grow from the first year and continued to do so even after the resignation of Reverend Turner in 1890. Reverend J. S. Steward was elected pastor in 1890. After four years Reverend Steward resigned, and in 1894 Reverend Thomas Scott of Toccoa, Georgia, was elected pastor. He served until 1900. Three other pastors were elected between 1900 and 1910. The church continued to grow in finance and membership. In October 1910, Dr. J. J. Starks was elected pastor. During his administration, the first church was renovated into a larger structure and the Women's Missionary Society was organized with Mrs. Eula Barton as the president. Dr. Starks resigned in 1913, after his appointment as President of Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina. Hence, Reverend A. B. Morton was elected pastor and served for the next thirty years, followed by Reverend J. W. Becks and Reverend R. B. Steward. In October 1950, Reverend J. R. Brown was elected pastor. During his administration many improvements were made. The church's first musical instrument, a piano, was purchased. The Junior and Senior Choirs were organized. The Usher Board was formed. The Junior Church, also established, incorporated the youth of the church in an administrative capacity. The youth served as deacons, treasurer, clerk, and choir during Sunday evening services. Also, during Reverend Brown's administration, New Foundation Baptist Church was consolidated with Canaan Baptist Church, forming New Canaan Baptist Church in February 1968. In 1970 improvements were made on the church and in 1972 a social hall was built. Reverend Brown retired in November 1975. Reverend Charles Gambrell was elected pastor, but resigned after five months of service. The present pastor is Reverend Otis Pettigrew. The church's present organizations consist of: Deacon Board, Trustee Board, Senior Choir, Junior Choir, Sunday School, with adult, junior, intermediate, primary and beginner levels of instruction, Young Girls' Association V. G. A., and Missionary Society.
