This earlier meeting site was located on the right side of Spearman Mill road atop the hill below Mr. and Mrs. Talford Broome's property in the present-day South Union Community. Mr. W.A. Dickson has written an outstanding history of the South Union Church, which was organized on Saturday, March 24, 1855. Up until that time, people from Beaverdam, Old Bethel, and Shoal Creek in Georgia had been meeting together, the presbytery being composed of Reverend John A. Davis, Habersham County, Georgia, moderator; Reverend H.M. Barton, clerk; and Baylus Hix, deacon, Beaverdam Church, Fair Play, SC. Reverend Barton gave the name "Union" to the first church. The following families were charter members, all by transfer from Beaverdam, Old Bethel, and Shoal Creek: Benjamin Marett, Jr. and wife Lucinda Keese Marett, Samuel S. McJunkin and wife Nancy Wright McJunkin, Elijah Land and wife Elizabeth, Susan Shelor, Mary Shelor, Nancy Thomas, Elizabeth Hughs, Reverend H.M. Barton and wife Sarah King, and Sarah H. Barton. Reverend H.M. Barton became the first pastor of the new church. The preaching day was set for the fourth Sunday in each month. Samuel S. McJunkin was the first church clerk and those following were Thomas Bibb, Samuel Messer Crawford, J. Clark Reeder, W.W. Leathers, and John L. Reeder during those early years. The first revival in the history of the little church began Saturday, September 22, 1855, and ran for eight days, during which time twenty- five persons joined. The names of those people were Sara Shelor, Mary Barton, Johannah Bibb, F.M. Cleveland, Thomas Bibb, Robert Marett, Mary Cleveland, Frances Jolley, William Barton, Asa Chandler, J.W. Stribling, Amanda Messer, Martha McJunkin, Catherine Bibb, Elizabeth Keese, Elizabeth Isbell, William Jolly, Jr. and wife Jane, Larkin Cleveland, Harriet Marett, Matilda Marett, Harriet Keese, and Mary Stribling. Nancy Bibb came by letter. Pastors serving from 1855 to 1893 were: Reverends H.M. Barton, Andrew W. McGuffin, Thomas Crynes, John M. Harris, Jesse Brown, J.T.W. Vernon, G.T. Grensham, E.L. Sisk, H.W. Smith, William Warren Leathers, and R.W. Seymour. For a time after its organization, the church had no board of deacons, but William Jolly was ordained to the office April 22, 1860; William Bibb and Jessie W. Stribling were ordained June 23, 1867; Samuel Messer Crawford and James Lawrence Burriss were ordained November 26, 1876; William Warren Leathers and Andrew Pickens Marett were ordained December 28, 1883. Other deacons serving later were Squire Hughs, David Martin, Michael Hopkins, Simpson Waite, William M. Brown, Thomas Wyly, and Newton A. Brewer. On May 23, 1889, William Warren Leathers, joining by experience, was ordained to the full ministry of this church. Reverend Charles Manley,D.D., J.R. Earl, H.T. Smith, and S.Y. Jameson performed the ordination. Another young man, James William Harris, died at the age of 26 years old while pursuing his studies at Mercer University, while preparing to enter the ministry. In Mr. W.A. Dickson's write-up of the histories of church, he relates: "The absence of dates precludes Sunday School history of the church; but short sessions were held, and when the importance of this branch of the work came to be recognized, this church was not laggard". In his writings, Mr. Dickson noted that W.A. Brewer and J.B. Harris were superintendent and assistant superintendent. J.L. Reeder served as secretary-treasurer. Baptists, Presbyterians, and Methodists built the old church for their use in common. However, in the course of time, the usual friction accompanying such enterprises began to be felt, and as a result, the old house was sold at public auction, the money being divided equally among the denominations. The new house of worship, which was worth some $600 and was finished throughout except painting on the inside, was built in 1879-80 upon land donated by Samuel S. McJunkin. The dedication took place Sunday, May 23, 1881, and Reverend H.M. Barton preached the sermon. Reverend J.T.W. Vernon was present by invitation. On May 27, 1886, the church voted a resolution of thanks to Benjamin Franklin Keese for his gift of a pulpit, Bible, and a church clock. According to a long- time South Union resident, Mrs. Claudia Burriss Anderson, the original structure faced the cemetery. After its organization in September, the church united with Tugaloo Association, and the meeting for that year was held with Hunter's Creek Church. Reverend H.M. Barton and Samuel S. McJunkin were the delegates. At that time, the Tugaloo Association embraced all of Franklin and parts of Habersham, Banks, and Hart Counties in Georgia, as well as southern Oconee and all of Fork Township in Anderson County except the church of Townville. The relation continued until some fifteen years when South Union and Beaverdam in Oconee, along with Double Springs, Andersonville, and New Prospect churches in Anderson withdrew from their respective associations and erected themselves into the Bethel Association. However, this organization had but a brief existence of five years. Union of Bethel was therefore affected, and it was thus that Beaverdam Association came into existence, relates Mr. W.A. Dickson in his writings. At this time, we find Mr. Dickson's records cease, and Mrs. Lula Isbell Burriss (Samuel L.) began her church history. Mrs. Burriss says, "We have gathered the above church's early history, its struggles to become firmly established, and we find it today a church in fine working order, a church could the founders but see, to be proud of. We find a church that is progressing". She also gives a list of the following pastors and the years they served this community: Reverend R.W. Seymour, 1893; Reverend J.M. McGuire, 1894-98; Reverend C. Wardlaw, 1900- 01; Reverend J.P. Vermillion, 1902; Reverend W.P. Holland, 1902; Reverend J.H. Earle, 1903; Reverend S.A. McDaniel, 1904-08; Reverend I.E. McDavid, 1909-10; Reverend T.L. Smith, 1911; Reverend L.D. Mitchell, 1912-13; Reverend C.D. Boyd, 1914-17; Dr. A.C. Wilkins, 1918; Reverend W.L. Coker, 1919; Reverend C.M. Robinson, 1920-21; Reverend J.E. Freeman, 1922-23; Reverend F.S. Childress, 1924-29. Mrs. Burriss cites writings from the church book, "In 1910, the church together with Bethel and Beaverdam formed a field giving the pastor full time. The church held its preaching services on the second and fourth Sundays, but later changed to the first and third Sunday". The following deacons were ordained in 1905: S.M. Vandiver, J.B. McJunkin, William Harrison Crawford. Henry M. Cole and Benjamin H. Cole were received as deacons from other churches. In 1920, the following men were ordained as deacons: W.F. Casey, S.L. Burriss, Elmer R. Land, and Elijah Bibb Keese. In 1925, the following men were ordained as deacons: J.F. White, Edwin Harris, and Mark Harris. In her readings of the old church minutes, Mrs. Lula Burriss states that, "In 1887, R.L. Reeder was elected church clerk and served his church in this capacity until ill health forced him to resign on November 23, 1924. He was a man whom everyone esteemed highly". His death occurred November 25, 1928 and he is buried in the South Union Cemetery by his wife Clarissa Messer Reeder. Other church clerks who served later were J.E. Farr and Reverend Andrew Pickens Marett. In 1922, James Franklin Burriss, great-grandson of Samuel S. McJunkin and grandson of deacon J.L. Burris and son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel L. Burriss, went out from this church to prepare himself for the ministry. He was ordained as a minister in 1928. His great-grandfather, Samuel S. McJunkin, was still able to attend this church from Sunday to Sunday until his death at the age of 93 years. Another ordained minister from this church was Elmer R. Land, who volunteered as a minister in 1924 and was ordained in 1929. In 1926, Mrs. Burriss reports that while Reverend F.S. Childress is pastor, the people saw a need for a larger church. In early 1926, plans were made for the erection of a new church house. Mr. Ward L. Thomas and the grandchildren of Samuel L. McJunkin, realizing the need for larger grounds on which to build, gave land surrounding the old church and thus enlarged it to its present acreage. The grandchildren of Samuel S. McJunkin were: Mrs. Mattie Brown, Mrs. Meta Allen, Mrs. Effie Harris, Mrs. Maude Power, Ottie and Samuel L. Burriss. The new church was a large brick building with Sunday School rooms and was modern in every way. The church was erected for the most part by free labor in the community as well as interested people from other communities. It is the present church building for South Union Baptist Church. In the 1980s, a fellowship hall was added to the present structure. The church records give a description of the feelings of the members at the time of the building of the new structure: "We see the time change, the old landmarks go, and they turn gray, but we still realize that we have the same Heavenly Father who guided the founders of the church to lay the foundation firmly on solid ground. And we today call this spot sacred. This new church is living monument to the God of all Christians to the founders of this church, to those who gave the sacrificial efforts to its erection in the several ways that have been manifest here and to those of whom a portion of their life's blood is here represented. We pray God that we may reap the memory of them all fresh in our hearts for having made this a Christian community in which we are to live. May we not forget to praise the Lord for permitting us to have gone thus far and may we say with Kipling: 'Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget, Lest we forget'". According to Mrs. Lula Burriss, the church records relate that "The church has for twenty years been one that has fostered all organizations appended to the church: a Woman's Missionary Society, the Young Women's Auxiliary, Girl's Auxiliary, Royal Ambassadors, and the Sunbeam Band". The Sunday School has been a vital organ in the life of this church. On March 15, 1930, Reverend F.S. Childress left the church, and Reverend L.H. Raines was called for one Sunday and one Saturday evening service. In 1930, Mr. J.E. Farr resigned as church clerk, and Mr. Elijah Bibb Keese was elected to this office. He resigned in November 1942 because of poor health and was made honorary clerk until his death in 1943. Reverend Raines resigned October 9, 1932 as pastor and was replaced by Reverend C.M. Robinson, with second and fourth Sundays as preaching days at a salary of $200 a year. The church was in a field with Beaverdam Church. In July of 1939, Reverend Robinson retired from active service. An interesting account in the clerk's minutes for February 23, 1935, stated that Mrs. Mattie Allen gave a report on Sunday's eggs being used to finish the church debt. This shows that the ladies of the church played a big part in helping pay for the building of the church. After Reverend Robinson retired in 1939, the church called Reverend W.R. Brown, who served the church for almost three years when he resigned to enter the Army as a chaplain. It was during his stay here that the church decided to have a full-time pastor. On March 7, 1943, Reverend H.O. Walker was called, under whose leadership the finishing of the church was accomplished and a Baptistry installed. In 1945, Reverend Alton Young was called as pastor; in 1949, Reverend W.P. Hall, Jr. served for a short while. Then Reverend Tommy Garrett was elected for 1950-53; Reverend Grady Tollison was called in November 1953, and the church continued to make progress. The old pastorium was sold and the local teacherage was purchased to be used as a pastorium. At the same time, the school building was leased for a community center. During Reverend Tollison's tenure, 34 persons were added to the church roll, making 278 members. In 1954, the following men were deacons: Fred Anderson, J.H. Alley, H.L. Goodman, William A. Harris, E.F. Land, James Pruitt, and A.T. Schlock. The church continues to progress and grow in membership from the former Bethel Meeting House on Asa Leathers' farm in the mid 1800s to the present day.
