Hendricks Zula Wood Atwood of Sweeny, Texas and Mary H. Copeland, Greenwood, SC. 5 May 2004 Note this is a revision of the previous postings on this web site of Lemuel Hendricks Bible. It is to be noted that data was added to the Bible that was not in the originals obtained from Faith Clayton in 1981 and 1985. The following is the original data transcribed from the original Bible leafs on Lemuel Hendricks' Family and his entry of the family of his father David Hendricks Sr. Copies of the original leafs have been supplied to this web site as well as the lineage of the Hendricks family back to their origination in the United States of America. However if you search the wills and deeds of David Hendricks Sr. who married Sarah Major you will find that he used the name David Hendricks as his family before him did and most of his children did. Lemuel also did this as you can see from some of his entries. As I noted from the first transcription on this web site that additions were made to LEMEUEL HENDRICKS Bible. I am a double Hendricks being a descendant of David Hendricks Sr. and Henry Hendricks Sr who were brothers. All of both our families have used the name as Hendricks in our legal documents. It was not until Pickens Co., Clerks of Court that entries were made using Hendrix for this family. The data in the Bible on David Hendrix's family is correct otherwise o----------o Herb's South Carolina Hendricks Tentative Up to David (5)* and Henry (5)* in Old Pendleton District, SC A Direct Line Non-Inclusive From what I can tell Henry (5)* and David (5)* below are descended from a James Hendricks (4)* father probably Henry Hendricks (3)* who first shows in SC in 1752 land deed records in Indian Creek Section of SC. To ID myself I'm a Hendricks-Smith-Major native of Old Pendleton District, SC (now Anderson Co., SC), the Secretary of the Hendricks Family Association and the Group Administrator of the Family Tree Hendricks(on) DNA Project. Further I am a double Hendricks. My Mother's Hendricks family descended as follows from David Hendricks Sr. 1. James Hendricks m Jane 2. David Hendricks Sr. m Sarah Major 3. David Hendricks Jr. m Mary Ann Major 4. Mary Jane Assenath Hendricks m Samuel Whitaker Smith 5. John Franklin Smith m Lillian Azelle Kay 6. Selma Mae Smith m A. Dupree Hendricks My Father's Hendricks Family descended as follows from Henry Hendricks Sr m Nancy Major. 1. James Hendricks m Jane 2. Henry Hendricks Sr. m Nancy Major 3. Henry Hendricks Jr m Margaret Couch 4. James Franklin Hendricks (CSA) m Mary Catherine Caroline Richardson 5. Henry Dupree Hendricks m Annie Lizzette Welborn 5. A. Dupree Hendricks m Selma Mae Smith You are most probably aware of David Hendricks Sr's will Blount Co., AL 1856 and the resulting probate records up through 1858 which name his children and grandchildren. I had always thought that David Hendricks Sr. and Henry Hendricks Sr were brothers. Our DNA test of one of my mother's cousins proved this by a match within one of a mutation site of the 37 marker DNA test. We also have found two other cousins one in Alabama and one in Arkansas who were descended from James Hendricks Jr m Jane McGill another brother of David Sr and Henry Sr. By going to the Hendricks(on) DNA Project Update 08232005 attached file you can see the DNA proofs by noting the James Jr., David Sr. and Henry Sr. sections. By noting the DNA numbers such as mine, 25497, and going to this web site http://www.familytreedna.com/public/hendrickson/ you can scroll down to family lineage of the four cousins I mentioned above. I'm one of those Anderson Co, SC natives who had kin folks in Pickens Co., SC and am related to numerous families still there in SC. We haven't solved the problem of where David Hendricks Sr.'s father came from yet. I've been working on this along with my Smith Family Cousins for more than 30 years but DNA testing has opened up a few more avenues. The Hendricks of our line are Western Europe descent, British Isles, France, Belgium, Netherlands, etc of origin. This is proved through DNA by the Haplotype markers from DNA testing. My great Aunt Anna Smith had the Smith and Hendricks down pat when she wrote them out a number of years ago. They were also published in 1936 in an Ononeta, AL newspaper. So far all of our DNA testing have confirmed exactly the Hendricks family history as passed down. A far cry from others in the Family of Hendrix-Hendricks. The attached file, far from complete, called Herb's SC Hendricks lineage 5-3-2005 shows a little of this Hendricks family, no where near all the data that exist. Attached file, Herb's Twelve Groups of Sc Hendrix-ck-s shows you a little of the puzzle just in SC we are trying to sort out. We have Hendricks family data from MA, NY, NJ, DE, MD, PA, TN, KY, VA, NC, SC, AL, GA, MS, LA, AR, etc. but haven't solved where James Hendricks m Jane is from yet. We're still DNA testing Hendricks but haven't got a match any further back than James Hendricks m Jane's sons. Would be interested in your Rector Family History if you have a file plus any other Hendricks Family data you might have run across. We have a multitude of Cousins out there of who some are still busy searching out for a clue as to where we came into the USA. So far no luck. I haven't beat SC records to death yet but am still busy looking into every nook and cranny. The only two groups we haven't tested fully yet, as noted from the 15 Groups of Hendricks in SC files, are the Lexington, SC Hendrix and what I call the SC Low Country Hendrick. We have a lady in Lexington Co., SC busy trying to talk a Hendrix from there in getting their DNA done. So far we haven't found a positive connection to the SC Low Country Hendricks after about 1776 where we have a James Hendrick in the Colleton Co. SC Militia. Would love to connect him as James Hendrick/s m Jane. No such luck to date. We also haven't been able to find any other living Hendrick from this SC Low Country Hendrick clan that came into Charleston in very late 1600s. Anyway if you have any specific questions let me know. I'm the one who posted and corrected the data from Lemuel Hendricks' Bible. Faith Clayton has maintained that Lemuel Hendricks wrote David Hendrix's family in the Bible. However two facts glare as this not being the truth even thought the given names and dates are correct for David Hendricks' Family. David Hendricks never used or signed his name as Hendrix in any of his document from Newberry Co., SC to Pendleton District, SC to Blount Co., AL. Now plenty of Clerks of Court used David Hendrix. I have the original of one of his land deeds in Pendleton District and no where on it is Hendrix used. Secondly if you get an original of the leafs of Lemuel Hendricks' Bible and look at Lemuel Hendicks' signature and compare it to the David Hendrix family writing you can easily tell Lemuel Hendricks did not do the writing from just the L, H and R in the writing. These letters are glaringly different from Lemuel Hendricks signature. Incidentally I have searched the Major family records in VA for the past 25 years and have straightened out the Hendricks and Smith Family connections to the Major family of VA, which were butchered by some Wanabees in SC back in the 1930-50 time frame, as I have lived here for the past 41 years. God Bless. Herb Hendricks Retired NASA Physicist Herb_316@MSN.com 1210 Long Meadow DR Lynchburg, VA 24502 434 832 7246 Major/Smith/Hendricks http://www.familytreedna.com/public/hendrickson/ o----------o Fifteen Groups of Hendricks in South Carolina before 1800? Updated 12/24/2004. By the way if you search for Hendricks in SC be sure and search for Henderick, Hendericks, Hindricks, Hendrake, Handrake and Henrick as well as Hendrix. There are a few Henrics also. Sometimes I think it is a problem with the person who is abstracting the information. The following is my synopsis of the Hendrix, Hendrick, Hendricks in SC before 1800. 1.) I'm trying to trace down some of the Charleston/Georgetown Hendrick/s to get a person from that line to get their DNA done. This is the John, William, Daniel, Timothy and James group. This group first showed in Charleston, SC around 1700. Some of this group is out of Haverill, Essex, Massachusetts which came here to get away from an epidemic in New England according to Deborah Byrd. The earliest is a John Henrick ~1700 in Charleston. The story goes they left the Charleston/Georgetown area when a group from Wales moved in ~1735. Deborah Byrd is the expert in this area. I've made a study of this group and have a four page listing that shows some more connectivity among this group and to other SC groups of Hendrick plus a lineage chart that Dorothy N Lloyd Wright made. If you want a copy send HDH an e-mail. If anyone is looking for a Charles Hendricks he may have come from this group. There is a young Charles Hendricks shows in 1757 and is probably about 7-8 years of age. I found what I think is the same person in the 1790 reconstructed GA Census along with a Jesse and a Whitehead Hendricks as I could not pick up a Charles in SC until another Charles Hendricks appears in ~1850.. The Andrew Hendricks, Henrie, Hendricksen of Charleston is claimed to be of Scot descent according to some people. If interested I can give you the reference. 2.) The early group of Hendricks in Pendleton seems to be of the Frontier Hendricks line (Tobias and James), and from a group of Hendricks TBD found 1800 in Newberry (HDH's Hendricks line), the Moses m Susanna line as well as the Greenville/Two Mile Creek Hendricks. John Hendrix of Alabama has his DNA done. He is a Frontier Hendricks either from Isaac Hendricks son of James m Elizabeth or Isaac Hendrix son of Andrew son of James m Elizabeth. A number of Isaac show in Two Mile Creek and later in Franklin Co., Ga. Another James Hendricks shows early in Pendleton Co when it is still Indian Country (signs his name James Hendricks). Sells some land and moves to Franklin Co., GA in 1797 (This one has wife Hanna) where he is shown selling land in Pendleton Co., SC. However in Franklin Co., GA he is known as James Hendrix. A James Hendrix is shown as a son of Isaac Hendrix and is a Judge in Franklin Co., GA. Before 1800 a second James Hendrix shows in Pendleton District who signs his name with an "x". Still another James shows after 1800 and signs his name James Hendricks. The picture I am getting is that there seems to be HDH's Hendricks, Moses m Susanna Hendricks and possibly a group of Indian Creek Frontier Hendricks and a group from Two Mile Frontier Hendricks in Old Pendleton. 3.) The Laurens Co., SC group seem to be from the Pamunkey (Virginia) Hans Hendrick line. This is Hans and wife Margaret, Obediah and William Winn. See Bob Baird's on line Pamunkey Hendrick lineage. 4.) The group of Hendricks on Cedar Creek at the Fairfield - Richland Co line also seems to be from the Frontier Hendricks line according to JSD. This includes Garrett Hendricks who moves around in SC and is from NC but of the Frontier Hendricks clan. JSD thinks he may have confused Frontier Hendricks children of Garret Sr and S. Henry. However there are two different James Hendricks/Hendrix there. What appears to be a literate Hendrix who signs his name and another James Hendricks who signs his name with an "X". 5.) The Orangeburgh Hendricks group; German-Swiss settlement: the Townships of Orangeburgh, Amelia and Saxe-Gotha. Note there area a lot of people with the given name of Henrich in Orangeburgh District. There were also English, Scots, Irish, French, Welsh, Dutch, Swedish and Jewish settlers who located in the area. By the end of the colonial period, however, Orangeburgh, Amelia, and Saxe-Gothe Townships were predominately German. At this time, the Orangeburgh District included Orangeburgh, Amelia (Calhoun County), Saxe-Gothe (Lexington) and Winton (Barnwell)(Aiken/Bamberg, Allendale). Web Site: first generation biographies of immigrant settlers in Orangeburgh District for the time period 1735 to 1773. http://www.rootsweb.com/~scogsgs/ffam/index.htm University of South Carolina Law Library Hans Henrich; My question is what is the difference between this group and the Lexington/Chesterfield Group? See 1790, 1800 and 1810 census of Orangeburg, Chesterfield, Lexington.; Amos, Henry, John, Tobias and William; Add Amos, Abraham, Mary and Peter; Add Elijah and Samuel through 1810. 6.) Another group is the Lexington Hendrix group which is defined at the Lexington Genealogy Exchange. Mostly Tobias Hendricks m Margaret Spreckel (? sp) , apparently Frontier Hendricks from PA. Lineage is constructed forward except for Henry Hendrix and Samuel Hendrix who disappeared from SC, so says author, after signing 1807 deed when Tobias m Margaret died. This group appears to be very prolific. Note after 1800 there is a Samuel Hendricks in Pendleton District. 7.) The Jabesh Hendricks group that shows in old Edgefield Co., SC is from the Albemarle (North Carolina) Hendricks. JSD says Jabesh: sons John, David, Daniel and James to Edgefield Co., SC and into Bullock Co., GA. Slim pickins according to my view. JSD never did recognize all the Daniel Hendricks that came into Charleston, SC. Others list a son Isaac also who is said to stay in NC. Edgefield Co., Sc and Bullock Co., GA show many records of this family. 8.) The group in Chester Co. are according to the Pamunkey Hendrick from VA... One was a James Hendricks who is still there in 1810 census.. William Hendricks 1790 Census. The James and Tiberius Hendrick solidifies Pamunkey Hendrick claim. More work to do there. 9.) The Darlington Co. group seems to be connected to a Joseph Hendricks who first shows on the 1800 Census of Darlington Co., SC. JSD says that Joseph and Andrew of Darlington Co., SC are associated with the Albemarle Hendricks of North Carolina 10.) The Newberry Co., SC group at first seemed to be all Frontier Hendricks but now I am sure they are not all Frontier Hendricks from DNA test results to date. See notes below. 11.) The Benjamin Hendricks family is from North Carolina., The Turner Hendrick/Kendrick, etc are unknown entities to me at this time. Turner is a Revolutionary War Soldier in SC. 12.) The Alexander Hendricks (Poor Irish Immigrants 1767- see Jane Revill's book.). A groups of Scots say this Alexander Hendrick is from Scotland. This group in Union Co., SC in the 1790 census and includes possibly Obediah and Richard. Note there is a Richard Hendricks in NC prior to this time. 13) Around 1800 another group of TBD Hendricks show in York Co., SC. 14. There is also a William and John Hendricks that show in Abbeville Co around 1800. 15. There is another group of Hendricks and Hendrickson that stay in the low Country. Early land deeds and wills 1780-1800. Then become more prolific after 1820. We Hendrix, Hendrick and Hendricks have at least 15 groups of Hendrix/ck/s in SC before 1800. More work and DNA is required. I found the above situation to be true of my Major family. Back in the early 1900s my Major family was doing and sponsoring Major family research from Longview, TX. If you read their data you would think there was only about two Major Families in SC. When I had finally solved the mystery, 2003, I had found at least 7 different Major families in SC. Everyone in upcountry SC was a son of my John Major. Some lists, Virginia Stephenson's book of 1999, gave some 14-18 children. Not so, he had four boys and five girls. Records prove this to be true. So some time you have to do the whole state to get the records. I spent a good part of ten years in VA searching all the Major families and another two in NC and SC, after I retired, to finally sort it all out. Who knows how many Hendricks groups? With Davenport's knack for grouping people it will probably take DNA testing to sort them all out. I know he is not correct about the Newberry Co., SC group. JSD is also not correct about the Moses Hendricks m Susanna first found in Fairfield and later Pickens Co., SC. I believe the possibility of at least two and possibly three groups. 1.) Henry Hendricks m Jane Linville/Miller – son Tory Captan William Hendricks m Margaret Evans 2.) James Hendrick/s m Jane; possible sons David, Henry, Moses, James, (John and William??) 3.) William Hendrix (dies in Newberry)/Henry Hendrix m Martha Marbut to Alabama. It is possible that this last group could be an off shoot of the Indian Creek Frontier Hendricks or a William from James m Jane.. However you have this William remaining here and an older William, John and David Hendricks to account for in Pendleton. They seem to fit the age group for Moses Hendricks m Susanna but that is just an age statement. Who is the James Hendricks of Newberry Co., SC buying land in Pendleton District from Thomas Riddle of Pendleton Co., SC. and is recorded in Union Co., SC. I believe this is the James Hendricks that appears in Pendleton District between 1795 and 1797 that signs his name with an "X". However I would have thought him to be a little older if he was a son of Old David a supposedly son of Henry Hendricks of Indian Creek. Herb Hendricks updated 12/24/2004 o----------0
