Hillcrest was found in 1951. Dewyatt Holder established it. The story goes that Dewyatt and his wife had a child to die in 1950. They buried the child in a cemetery in town. Dewyatt was up there one day, pulling weeds up around the grave. He thought it would be nice if there were a cemetery that did perpetual care. So he went to his father and discussed the idea with him. His father told him it wouldn't work but he kept on after his father about a piece of land his father owned. (The land is the part of the cemetery on the right coming out of Pickens.) His father finely gave him the land in 1951, and he started Hillcrest on it. Dewyatt's child was the third person to be buried in Hillcrest. Later on his child was moved again to the Mausoleum across the road. (The small white Mausoleum with Holder on the front of it. The sundering area is their family too. Hillcrest was owned solely until 1997 then they merged with Stewart Industries. Dewyatt's grandson told the story to me. As of March 11,2004 the cemetery has 7966 Persons in it. And I would like to thank him so very much for sharing it with me so I could share it with everyone who reads it on here. I thought it was very heart warming.
