W. M. Walker, an evangelist serving on the state mission board conducted a series of revival meetings. It was during this time a band of people felt led to organize a Missionary Baptist Church. A presbytery was called on September 25, 1910 at 5:00 P.M. in the King school house, composed of the ministers and deacons of Pleasant Hill, Six Mile, Mt. Tabor, and Keowee Baptist churches. After the presbytery was organized the chairman read the articles of Faith and the church covenant which was unanimously adopted by the 15 charter members. The name King was selected for the newly organized church. The name King was in honor of Jonathan King who was a pioneer Baptist Church preacher in the area. Grove was later added and the name became Kings Grove. Through a generous spirit of Christian love, three acres of land was donated by Mr. Eugene Baskin Ramsay with $50.00 toward the building. A building committee was appointed and the building was started. The entire membership gave of their means and labor as they could afford. By the time the church was finished in 1912 it was paid for. The entire cost was $1,500.00. The State Mission Board gave $100.00 on the building and helped pay on the pastor's salary until the building was finished. After organization of the church the members voted to support the mission programs. These were the Home Missions, Foreign Missions, State Missions, Baptist Hospitals and Orphanage homes. In the early years the church was lighted with kerosene lamps. The members traveled to church by horse and buggy and wagons. During the monthly conference meetings they called for peace and fellowship in the church. If there was any discord or members out of fellowship they were brought before the church, and a time set for them to meet with a committee voted by the church to investigate the situation. In 1938 during conference the church voted to move the church to a new location. The land was sold to the government (now Clemson University) for a game reserve. Most of the members lived in the area that was sold, and they all moved away and became members of neighboring churches. The area was used as a practice bombing range during WWII. The new church was built on land donated by John B. Enrekin, with lumber taken from the old church and money pledged by the member in 1939 and 1940. Revival services were held the first Sunday in August each year after the crops were laid by. The school faculty and students would attend the 11am services. The children would walk to church in a line supervised by the teachers. Needless to say if they misbehaved they were taken care of when they returned to school. The pastors were elected annually. The services were held bi-monthly in the early years. The first full time pastorate was started in 1953 with Rev. Clarence Entrekin as pastor. There have been 21 pastors since the organization of the church. The present pastor is Billy E. Dickerson. At the present time the total membership is 217, with 182 on the church roll. In 1994 there were 33 baptisms, leading in the Pickens-Twelve Mile Association. The oldest active member in 1995 is Ella Mae Entrekin, age 86. She has taught Sunday School for over 50 years, served as WMU director, sang in the choir, and numerous other jobs. The church has had its' ups and downs through the years, but it has been greatly blessed by God. 'Thou Art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it" Matt 16:8. Submitted by: Nora E.
