I know there will be some mistakes and much more that could have been said. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have putting it together. I would like at this time to thank all who had a part in making this material available to me whether it be by word of mouth, telephone, note clippings, pictures, old bulletins or tape recorded material. Special thanks goes out to Ruth Davis for giving the many hours and days of research and visiting other churches. Every time I called on her she would say, "I'll be ready when you get here." Then there was Dot Redding who was always having her work interrupted to run off something or help find some special materials. I would like to end with two verses of scripture: 1st Corinthians 3:11 "An no one can ever lay any other real foundation than that one we already have - Jesus Christ. "Deuteronomy 4:9 "But watch out! Be very careful never to forget what you have seen God doing for you. May his miracles have a deep and permanent effect upon your lives! Tell your children and your grandchildren about the glorious miracles he did. " Mary Louise Hill Completed 1992 Researchers: Ruth Davis Mary L. CARMEL The Bible contains the greatest works of history ever written. It creates a bold sweep from eternity past to eternity future. There are 17 books in the Old Testament dealing with history. Baptists have lived in America for 300 years. They have grown from one congregation in the late 1630's to more than 102,000 churches today. Baptists in the United States comprise over 90% of the Baptist in the world. Mt. Carmel is one of this number and was organized May 6, 1834 with 13 charter members. Those 13 members were: Noah K. Smith, Rebecca K. Smith, Joab Kennemur, Margaret K. Dacus, Cynthia Kennemur, Charles Davis, Nancy Davis, Daniel Looper, Solomon Looper, Elizabeth Gorman, Violet Corben, Henry Thompson and Katherine Thompson. About 1830, a small body of Christians were holding community prayer meetings in their homes and the idea of a church was originated. Permission was obtained from Cross Roads Church for them to meet as an arm of that church, but this effort did not seem very successful. After they had met for some time, the mother church sent Brother Joe Looper to ask them to come back to Cross Roads. A few faithful sisters, Miss Kennemur, Mrs. Mary Lathem, Mr. Nina Hunt and Mrs. Martha Burdine begged Brother Looper to meet with them and through their combined effort this church grew. Mt. Carmel was organized as a church in January, 1837. the presbytery consisted of the following: Brothers William King, David Blythe, Joseph Robinson, Allen Robinson, Stephen Powell, W. Cantrell and Mark Freeman. Brother King acted as moderator. Charles Davis and John Kennemur, the first two deacons of this church were ordained by this presbytery. Brother Davis seems to have been clerk from the beginning, but in February, Brother Harvey Kennemur was elected clerk. In April of the same year, the church received Stephen Powell as a member. He was a licensed preacher and in July of the same year, he was ordained a preacher by the following brethren: Elders Jordan, Blythe and Capps. Brother Powell seems to have been supplying the church at the time of his ordination. In July, 1840, the church elected Brother Jackson as a deacon. At this time, the church was being visited by various preachers: Brothers Boroughs, King, Blythe, Jordan, Robinson and Brother Miller, a circuit rider. The church seems to have been growing spiritually and numerically. In October, 1842, the church brought into its membership by experience, the much-loved and noble servant of God, Rev. W.B. Singleton. The church also set apart two new deacons. Joshua Jackson and D.H. Kennemore. The presbytery consisted of Rev. T.L. Roper, Rev. S. Powell, and Deacons Grogan, Whitmore and Davis. In 1834, Brother Kennemur resigned as clerk and Brother H. Cleve Hunt was elected and served until April, 1845. Brother Red Rackley was elected clerk in November, 1845. Brother Powell was still supplying this church and asked permission to establish an arm of the church at old Bushy Creek, now Siloam Church, and in June, 1846, this arm was organized as a church. Mt. Carmel was still growing and in 1847 sent out another preacher, D. Harvey Kennemore. He was ordained by the laying on of hands of the following: Brothers D. Powell, A. Williams and James Kay. It seems that Brother Powell preached for the church from the time it was organized until 1849. In February, Brother D. Blythe was called to the pastorate and served until 1852 when Jesse Dean was elected. In this year, Brother John Smith was elected. In 1850, Brother John Ariail was called to the pastorate and preached twice a month. During Brother Ariail's pastorate, the church ordained and set apart another preacher, Brother N.R. Smith who was ordained by the following: Rev. Jesse Dean, David Blythe, T. Looper and W.F. Singleton. In February, 1856, Brother Holder was called as pastor. In 1857, Brother Powell was called and served one year. Then the church called Rev. W.B. Singleton who served one year. Rev. T. Looper took charge of the church and served until 1862. Elder David Blythe was then called and served until January, 1866 when the church called Rev. A.D. Bowers. At the same time the church elected two more deacons, W.L. and H.L. Smith. They were set apart by a presbytery consisting of Rev. T. Looper, Rev. A.D. Bowers, Deacons Joseph Looper and Elija Roper, L.R. Smith was elected church clerk. In 1869, Rev. W.B. Singleton again took charge of the church as pastor. In 1872, B.F. Dilworth was elected church clerk and Rev. T. Looper preached for the church. In 1873, Rev. Singleton again supplied the church. In 1874, Rev. A.D. Bowers was called and in 1875 Elder G.W. Singleton was called as pastor, and Brother N.K. Smith was elected clerk of the church. In 1876, Rev. W.B. Singleton again preached for the church and L.R. Smith was set apart as deacon. The presbytery consisted of Rev. W.B. Singleton and Rev. G.W. Singleton. In September, 1878, the old church having gone to rack and the members having been meeting in the school house for several years, resolved to build a church. The following building committee was appointed: Brothers W.L. Smith and B.F. Dilworth, citizens G.W. and J.S. Lathem and W.R. Clardy. The ground that the first church stood on was donated by W.R. Clardy and the largest contributors were G.W. and J.S. Lathem. Later the building committee was enlarged by appointing E.T. Holcombe, L.R. Smith, J.W. Hunt, S. O'Sheal, W.B. Singleton, M.F. Williams and citizen W.J. Ponder. The new church was dedicated September 27, 1879. The dedication sermon was preached by Elder W.B. Singleton from Timothy 3:15. By request of the church, Rev. G.W. Singleton helped to raise the money to paint the church. In February, 1880, Brother N.K. Smith resigned as clerk and Brother N.A. Christopher was elected. In March, 1881, Rev. S.A. Gary took charge of the church and during his pastorate the church had a great revival and the church was greatly strengthened and another, J.F. Singleton, was received into the church. In Feburary, 1884, Rev. J.W. Hutchins took charge of the church. In May, 1887, the church set apart a new deacon, Brother William Kennemore. The presbytery consisted of Elders J.W. Hutchins, T. Looper and deacons N.K. Smith and J.F. Singleton. Ordination prayer was given by Brother T. Looper. The first burial at this church was September 4, 1887, and was a child of Brother Kennemore, a zealous member of the church. Mr. Noah Kennemur was the first church member to die. In October, 1887, Brother Singleton resigned as clerk of the church, and J.R. Lathem was elected and continued in that position about 28 years, missing only seven conferences during that time. In November, 1887, Rev. S.A. Gary was elected pastor and served one year. During Brother Gary's pastorate, the church bought its first organ and the following brethren acted as a committee to raise the money and purchase the organ: T.O. Singleton, James Hunt, H.G. Smith and M.F. Williams. In 1889, Brother W.B. Singleton preached for us, and in May of the same year, Brother J.F. Singleton was ordained a minister of the gospel by the following presbytery: Revs. W.B. Singleton, Thomas Looper and J.M. Stewart. Brother Stewart delivered the charge to Brother Singleton which was an able and strong one. In May, 1890, the church set apart two new deacons, Brothers J.R. Lathem and LP. Garrick. The presbytery consisted of Brothers W.B. Singleton, J.F. Singleton, W.L. Smith, N.K. Smith, William Kennemore, Melvin Weston and J.T. Childress. In 1891, Brother J.F. Singleton began preaching for us. In 1892, Brother Johnnie Freeman took up the work and in 1895, Brother W.B. Singleton again supplied the church and continued until 1898, making a total of 19 years that he preached for the church and his last years were his best years; and none but God can tell what a great work he did for the church. He departed this life September 8, 1898. In 1898, Rev. T.C. Holtzclaw began to preach for the church and continued until January, 1902 when he resigned. During his pastorate, we started a fund to place a monument to W.B. Singleton and his church headed the list with $27.50. We also helped to raise a monument to Brother Hutchins. In March, 1902 Brother B. Holder began preaching for us and preached for the balance of the year. In April, 1903, W.C. Seaborn took charge of the church and preached for this year and the next. In 1905, one of our own boys, Brother W.A. Christopher, began preaching for us and during this pastorate, the church was greatly built up. Three new deacons were added to the church, L.L. Smith, John Christopher and Leigh Hunt. The presbytery consisted of Robert Kay of Georges Creek, Samuel Looper, J.B. Findley, Martin Bowan and John Roper of Cross Roads, N.K. Smith, G.E.R. Williams and J.R. Lathem of this church. Rev. W.A. Christopher acted as moderator and Brother H.K. Williams acted as clerk. At this meeting, Brother W.A. Christopher received a unanimous vote and indefinite call. He served two years; then Brother W.C. Seaborn was called and served two years. Brother J.M. Culbertson then preached for us nine months and W.R. Holland finished out the year. In 1909, Brother W.J. Foster was called and served five years. The church was greatly blessed during his pastorate. We then called Rev. D.W. Hiott. The above was an excerpt for the Pickens Sentinel, official paper of Pickens County, Pickens, South Carolina, September 2, 1915. It was prepared by a committee consisting of Messengers J.R. Lathem, Joseph Looper, N.K. Smith, L.L. Smith and G.E.R. Williams and read before the church by Mr. C.V. Lathem. Through the combined efforts of Brother Joe Looper and a few faithful sisters, Mt. Carmel grew to become a church. o----------o Mt. Carmel Baptist Church was organized in 1834 as an arm of Crossroads Baptist Church and was constituted as a church in 1837. The thirteen charter members began the church by holding meetings in their homes. The first new building was dedicated in 1879. The current sanctuary is built on 7.5 acres purchased from W. Frank Hester in 1966. The fellowship building and gymnasium were completed in 1977, and additional facilities and renovations were completed in 1998. Mt. Carmel has licensed and/or ordained fourteen ministers, beginning with the first preacher called. Rev. Steven Powell. The first full-time pastor, Rev. C. B. Smith, was called in 1958. Our present pastor. Rev. Chuck Bridges, assumed the responsibility in 1991. In September 1996, the church began "Soul Harvest" as a stewardship enrichment program. It continues to influence our church through the "Soul Harvest" visitation and outreach ministries. In 1998, Mt. Carmel became the sponsor of a mission, Grace Christian Fellowship. In 1999, Mt. Carmel Christian School was established. Because of the vision, commitment, and obedience of God's people at Mt. Carmel, we have entered the year 2000 celebrating God's faithfulness. We are rejoicing in how He has richly blessed us! By: Piedmont Baptist Association 2003 o----------o Mt. Carmel was the outdoor baptismal pool. The day before a baptism was going to take place, water was run into the pool to wash it out. Pipes would bring water from the spring to fill up the baptismal pool. The "snake caper" is another often told story. In the words of Mrs. Ruth Thornton, "I don't remember the year, and I don't remember the preachers, but the snake stands vividly in my mind. A ceiling plank in the church had come loose, and a big snake was hanging out of it..."
