Latitude N 34 57.317e x Longitude W 82 33.617e CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ According to the oral history given by the Senior Citizens of our church and the Dacusville Community, the church known as NINE FORKS BAPTIST CHURCH was organized because of a need to have a place of worship closer to the residents of the area. Prior to that time residents had to travel to Cross Roads or Peters Creek Churches to worship. Travel was by buggy, horse and wagon, horseback or foot. Roads, of course, were not paved and were frequently muddy and hard to travel. Many roads were nothing more than wagon trails. Legend tells that these roads, nine in all - some no more than driveways, came together near this location, thus, the name Nine Forks. The first worship services were possibly in a brush arbor. The first church building was a one room frame building that set in the area of the property that is now the northeastern corner of our cemetery, the area just behind our church sign. The building was heated with a large pot-bellied stove that kept the church warm and cozy if you were close by, but no one sat on the back pews in cold weather. Many of our older members have fond memories of services in that building. Not only was going to church beneficial for the worship experience, but it also provided the only social activity for many people each week. In compiling this history of Nine Forks Baptist Church, Dacusville, South Carolina, I found a shortage of records of activities for the early years. Minutes could not be located for the years prior to 1955, and much of the information for later years is incomplete. Mr. William W. Mull compiled a history from 1885 to 1961 which was read at Homecoming June 4, 1961. This is being reprinted as presented by Mr. Mull as an account of the first 75 years of this church. The updated history from June 1961 through the end of the 1984-85 church year has been summarized according to the time of service of the pastors of the last 25 years. This history has been taken from the minutes of the church, oral history, and associational minutes. Anyone with additional information concerning the history of Nine Forks Church is encouraged to share that with us so that this history can be updated, corrected, or expanded for the use of the membership of the future. I would like to thank each person that has helped me compile this history. Jane B. Handley o----------o Nine Forks Baptist Church 3207 Earls Bridge Road Easley, South Carolina 29640 In 1885 a group of Christian people decided that in order to better serve God in the Dacusville community a Baptist church was needed here in the central part of the community. At this time there were no paved roads, and people traveled to and from church in buggies and wagons. On May 1, 1885, a Baptist church was organized and called Nine Forks Baptist Church. Rev. D.C. Freeman was called as the first pastor by the twenty-three charter members: Alva Griffin A.J. Hunt Mrs. Elizabeth Looper Mrs. Frannie Griffin J.H. Hunt J. Tyre Looper G.W. Griffin Mrs. L.F. Hunt Mrs. Martha Looper Miss Dora Hester Micail Hunt J.P. Robinson Miss Emma Hester Mrs. Susan Hunt Mrs. Mary Robinson Mrs. Harriet Hester W.E. Hunt Mrs. Ellen Talbert Joseph Hester Mrs. Ida Julian Thomas Williams S.S. Hillard Daniel Looper During the first fifty years the church was served by nineteen pastors: D.C. Freeman J.A. Howard E.J. Mullinax Harry S. Lawhorn W.G. Mauldin M.C. Looper B.E. Grandy R.J. Joiner Jit. Singleton W.D. Hammott S.E. Welchel D.P. Montgomery B.P. Mitchel J.W. Bass H.E. Hill J.D. Bowen F.T. Cox Ralph W. McKinney Charles D. Gardner The pastors from 1936 to present day include: T.B. Lanham Norman Bell Lucius Macion A.C. Martin J.A. Hunnicutt Earl Waters Coman Brown Eugene Edwards Lyman A. Rich Robert Wheeler C.B. Smith Felton Cox George Case Gary Ward Milton Parker In 1928 the question of a new building was raised and in the spring of 1929 steps were taken to start the building. Timber was given by the members and carried to the McConnell Saw Mill. The building was erected with labor given mainly by the members of the church. When the first payments were due, America was in the depth of the Great Depression. It was very hard to make the payments, but in December of 1934 the last installment was made. In 1935 the building stood, a little unfurnished but free from debt. At this time there were 161 members, with 115 involved in Sunday School. The pastor's annual salary was $230.00, which was an increase of $130.00 from 1934. With free lumber and labors of love from the members, the Sunday School rooms were soon finished. Let's close our eyes and go back to see what the church was like. There was a white wooden building with covered steps and inside were wooden benches made by the church members. The church was lighted by two kerosene lamps hanging at the front of the building. A large pot-bellied wood heater kept the church warm and cozy if one stayed close to it. The classed had sliding doors, and it was hard to keep up with what was going on in one class because of so many noises from the others. Usually there were two more classes that met in the auditorium. In 1955 Rev. Milton Parker was called as pastor at an annual salary of $840.00. There were 111 members, including non-residents. The average attendance in Sunday School was fifty three. It was not until 1953 that the church had a full-time pastor who had an annual salary of $2,240.00. Construction began in December of 1960 and the building was completed in April, 1961. the church building was completely renovated inside and out, adding two new rest rooms and a nursery, six Sunday School rooms, baptistery, and a steeple. New church furniture was added at a cost of $2,354.30. In 1981 the question was raised about changing the name of the church to Dacusville First Baptist, but it was quickly voted down. The name, Nine Forks Baptist Church, has retained its original name. On the first Sunday in May in 1985 Nine Forks celebrated its 100th anniversary. Ground was broken for the new Family Life Center. Years later in 1990, a tornado touched down in this area and completely destroyed the Family Life Center. A few other things in this area were also destroyed. Rick Hall's garage was blown off its foundation, the front porch of Bill and Mary Roach's house was hit. A trailer across the street from the church was rolled over by the tornado. Fortunately, there were no bodily injuries. It was hard to recover, but within months the buildings were rebuilt. After they rebuilt the life center, they added a new lower parking lot. Information for this article was obtained from a published history of the church and an interview with Margaret Ogle, a current member. Written by Jeremy Hall and Dale Stancil.
