Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery Off Hwy 135 on Mt Tabor Rd. Several miles from PumpkinTown. Latitude N34 57.154 x Longitude W82 36.649 CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ According to the South Carolina Baptist Convention 175th Anniversary minutes, Mt. Tabor Baptist Church was organized in 1861 with 25 charter members. The original building was a small one-room white frame building, located in front of the cemetery with seating for about one hundred. Historical records show that there have been 34 pastors to serve Mt. Tabor since 1865. Many early pastors served only one year; however, sometimes they were called for "another year." In 1946, Rev. U. G. Wilson is listed as full time pastor with an annual salary of $1,800. The second church building was incorporated into the present sanctuary, which was built in 1947. The men of the church dug the basement, using a horse and scoop. The steeple was not erected until December 1984. In 1964, the church constructed a two-story educational building, which is connected to the sanctuary by a breezeway. The church purchased the Mt. Tabor school building for use as a parsonage that now is the youth activity center. It was on November 2, 1888, when the organization of our church took place. The meeting was called to order by Rev. D.C. Freeman. The record indicates that Rev. G.M. Simmons became the church's first pastor. From the very beginning this church was active and interested in progress. The minutes reveal an active church which met once a month which was normal for churches of that time. However, as time went on the church remained a part-time church until the turn of the century when it began to meet twice monthly. It was not until the early fifties that the church became a full time church. The church now has a program which meets the needs of all our people. They have organizations for all members and all age groups. They are now getting ready to build our new church, which will be located 6 miles north of Easley on Hwy. 135. Listed below are the names of men who pastored the church. Dates of the pastorates will not be listed. The list does not indicate the order in which the pastorates occurred. Rev. G.M. Simmons; Rev.
