The church was given the name Poplar because there were many poplar trees on the property; and Spring, because it was located near the spring. In the published history of Pleasant Grove Church, the following is written: Ira Holliday "made his living in the sawmill business and did donate the lumber for a black church, located below Daniel High School. The cemetery is all that remains of that church today." Source: Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, p. 10. It was stated, that it was a beautiful white church. Poplar Spring Baptist Church relocated in 1944 to Central, at the intersection of Foot and Watkins Streets where they worshiped in a two-story building called The Hall. Services were held downstairs in the building for many years. The present Poplar Spring is located in the same area. The church is now called New Poplar Spring Baptist Church. Ben E. Griffith, who lives in Greenville is the pastor in 2004. By: Central Yesterday and Today Mattie Mae Morgan Allen, p. 53 Notes: Interview with J. C. and Polly Hamilton. The Hamiltons related in an interview in June 2004, that the property was originally a boarding house for Black residents and called The Hall. It was torn or burn down and the new church was built.
