There is a church on the left about a mile from the cross road and just beyond the church on the left is a blond brick house on top of a hill. I was told that the old Mt. View cemetery was somewhere behind this house. Dr. Mitchell and I went up there in July but no one was home to ask if they might know anything about it. It was so overgrown with trees and bushes that trying to find it without knowing where to look would have be very difficult and it was so hot that neither of us felt up to the task of doing too much walking. The person that told me about this cemetery said that the last person that he knew of being buried there was in the late 1940's and he couldn't give me too much information except a general location. Robert Dodson o----------o The GPS for Mountain View Baptist Church you have is for the white church on Mt. View Church RD. The church and school below is the one that I am trying to find. It is located on Hwy 183 about 1 mile west of the intersection of Hwy 133 (Mt. Olivet Rd.) and Hwy 183 (Walhalla Hwy.) It is supposed to have been on hill on the left just past a church that is on the left. The store building that was also used for the church is not there anymore. Below is and article that Ann Sheriff sent to me about it. Mountain View Colored School Providing educational opportunities was difficult in the later 1880's, but it was doubly so for the black community due to sparsity in population and limited economic opportunities. The Mountain View School was no exception. Established in 1891 and located on present Highway 183 a few miles east of Keowee River, it was located on a tract of land donated by Abner Mitchell for a church and school. Betty Hendricks, writing in 1949 on History and Present Status of the Negro Schools of Pickens County, South Carolina as a thesis for Furman University, stated: "in 1891, a Mr. Mitchell gave the colored people of Six Mile a tract of land for a school and a church. In 1891, Bert Rosaman, a colored man, built a one-room log cabin that had a fireplace, window of the shutter type, and homemade seats. The children wrote on slates, as there were no blackboards. The first teacher was Willie Mae Craig. By 1926, the log cabin had rotted down and a Mr. Breazeale gave them a store building for the church and school. In 1949, Mountain View was a one-teacher rural elementary school." One brief reference is made to this school in 1937-1938 as a one-room school. The church and school ceased to operate and presumably the students from that area became a part of the nearby schools when integration was implemented. Robert Dodson o----------o The cemetery is on private property owned by George Newton. Mr. Newton bought the church and cemetery property form the church in 1974. The last pastor of the church was the only surviving member of the church at the time of the sale and he signed the deed. I believe Mr. Newton said his name was Rev. Cunningham. Mr. Newton also stated that the last service held in the church was a funeral in 1954. He said that there were Rosemond, Simpson and Liddle buried in the cemetery. Only three headstones and two funeral home markers were located. There were several fieldstones and numerous unmarked graves. Other headstones may be covered with leaves. The cemetery is covered with small trees and some underbrush but is not difficult to walk through. Mr. Newton said that he would not refuse any family member access to the cemetery. He only asks that they do not smoke because of the fire hazard and that they respect his property. The cemetery is at the very edge of his yard and the old church was about 200 feet beyond the cemetery. The church and cemetery was on the old Walhalla road and ran just in from of Mr. Newton's house and then past the cemetery and church.
