Goodman Is No More Died at His Home at Clemson on Tuesday of Last Week Last week the sad news of the death of John S. Goodman reached Walhalla, and it came as a great surprise and source of sorrow to his many friends here. The day before his death he had spent almost the entire day here with friends and had announced to several his intention to purchase a home here and moving to Walhalla with his family in the near future. He left here with the intention of returning in a day or two to perfect his arrangements for making this his home. Mr. Goodman was in the best of spirits while here, and apparently in the best of health. Returning to his home, however, he was suddenly stricken with heart failure and died Tuesday night. He was a good man and a true citizen, and his death has taken one of Oconee's sons who had long been a familiar figure from center to circumference of this county. Mr. Goodman was 63 years of age and was born and raised in Edgefield county, this State. His parents, however, moved to Oconee when he was a comparatively young man. He had been connected with Clemson College in various capacities almost from the very beginning of that institution, and his death will bring sorrow to many of the graduates from Clemson in all parts of the State, for he was a universal favorite with the young men of Clemson, with whom he was closely associated for so many years. Mr. Goodman was a Confederate soldier, and served well the cause of the Confederacy during the four years of the late war. Honest, industrious, upright in all his dealings with his fellow-men, he was one of those of whom it could be truthfully said that he counted his friends by the number of his acquaintances. His death has moved from our midst a man we had long known and respected for his real worth, and at whose death we feel a personal pang of sorrow. He was a real man, and many mourn when such an one is taken from earth. His remains were laid to rest in the cemetery of the Old Stone church, near Pendleton on Thursday morning, the funeral service being conducted by the Masonic fraternity. We join with hosts of friends of the deceased in extending sympathy to the bereaved ones in their sorrow. He leaves to mourn his death a wife and ten children - seven sons and three daughters.
