Kelley, a most prominent and substantial citizen of the Hagood's Mill section of the county, died at his home yesterday, the 25th inst., after a short illness of dropsy. Mr. Kelley was born in North Carolina in 1832 and in young manhood he moved to Oconee county and marrying there, his wife being a Miss Watts, of the Tunnel Hill section. About 40 years ago he moved to Pickens county and early became identified with every movement looking to the advancement and upbuilding of the community in which he lived. He contributed largely of his means to the support of the church and was a great advocate of good educational facilities and for a great many years served as trustee of the schools in his neighborhood. For a number of years he managed the Hagood home plantation. He was a member of Porter's Chapel Methodist and one of the pillars of this institution and his loss will be felt keenly by the members. His remains will be interred there this evening. Mr. Kelley leaves a wife and several children besides a host of relatives and friends to mourn his death. As the clods hide the mortal remains of our friend, we drop a tear in memory of his upright and faithful walk through life. While he was a gallant Confederate soldier and in many a fierce battle he has fought his last fight, but he is able to triumph even over death and can exclaim, "O, death! Where is thy sting? O, grave! Where is thy victory?" He has fought a good fight, he has kept the faith and has gone to his eternal reward. Peace to his ashes. To the widow who mourns in her desolation and the children who cry in their sorrow, we extend heartfelt sympathies. Additional Comments: Mr. Kelley was the oldest child of Zachariah Sullens Kelley and Caroline E. Bird.
