Abstracts of Documents related to the Estate of James Langston Contributed by Marian Miller , copyright 1999 Pickens Co., SC Deed Book A-1, Pg. 167. Deed dated 29 Dec. 1797 from JOHN REID to JAMES LANGSTON, JUR., both of Pendleton Dist, SC, for 30 pounds sterling, 200 acres on the south side of Little River, being part of a tract containing 476 acres granted to REID on 3 Dec. 1792. Witnesses: JAMES SMITH and JOSHUA HOLDEN. Deed was proved on 19 Mar. 1800, but not recorded until 17 Aug. 1829. South Carolina Archives, Anderson Co., Estate Papers, Roll #396, Estate of JAMES LANGSTON, deceased. Letters of Administration issued to JOANA LANGSTON and JOHN LANGSTON on 17 Nov. 1818. The documents state there were seven legatees and the widow JOANNAH. SAMUEL BECK, GEORGE COLLINS, WILLIAM KELLY, JOHN LANGSTON, and JANE LANGSTON received shares. Two minor children, JOANNAH LANGSTON and WILLIAM D. T. LANGSTON, were not named in the estate papers. Their names appeared in the following deed of gift from their mother. Anderson Co., SC Deed Book P, Pg. 135. Deed of Gift dated 8 Jun. 1820 from JOANNAH LANXTON, widow of JAMES LANXTON, to "my two children, namely JOANNAH LANXTON, my daughter, and WILLIAM D. T. LANXTON, my son, both of the state and district above mentioned. ...to my daughter, JOANNAH LANXTON, one feather bed & furniture and one cow & calf; to my son WILLIAM D. T. LANXTON one-third part of the plantation where I now live during my natural life and one chestnut sorrel mare with a blase in her forehead named Blase, two cows and calves, ten head of hogs, one feather bed and furniture..." (Note: William D. T. Langston was only five years old. The timing could be an indication Joannah was planning to remarry.) Pickens District, SC, Deeds 1828-1968, Vol. F-1, Pg. 53. Release and Indenture dated 25 Oct.1837 from WILLIAM LANGSTON, WILLIAM KELLY, SAMUEL BECK, WILLIAM SHYARS (SHARYER), all of Rabun County, GA JOHN LANGSTON of Lumpkin County, GA; RICHARD HOLDEN of Pickens District, SC; to JOHN CAPEHART of Pickens District, for $200, 207 acres on Little River where JAMES LANGSTON had lived and deceased, we being the legal heirs of said estate. Signed WM. LANGSTON, WM. KELLEY, SAMUEL BECK, WM. SHYARS (SHARYER), JOHN LANGSTON, RICHARD HOLDEN. This deed also was signed by JOANNAH DONALDSON, believed to have been the widow JOANNAH who deeded her share of the estate to her minor children in 1820.
