SAMS' yard opposite the Bapt. ch. and alighted in a tree in the yard of COL. JESEPPH WALKER. We regret the death of MR. THOMAS CAMPBELL JAMES son of REV. A.A. JAMES which occured in Union on the 8th instant. MR. JAMES was the some time principal of the Male High School at Reidville and has made many friends in this county. MRS. PIEHUFF an estimable old lady near 100 years of age, died on last Saturday in the neighborhood of Boiling Springs Bapt. Ch. MR. J.B. TOLLESON brought in for inspection a stalk of May Wheat grown on his lot in town, 5 feet high , being five inches taller than the stalk brought in by JOS.YOUNG, SR. MRS. WOODWARD ALLEN sent us the first beans for which we return thanks. BOARDING HOUSE MRS. JOHN HANNUM {formely MRS. HARVEY} has a boarding house at MRS. CLEVELANDS RESIDENCE on the public square. She will be pleased to entertain. FURNITURE & COFFINS - JOHN GEDDES Main St. A mule was killed belonging to REV. W.L. BROWN by lighting near Glenn Springs last Friday. The heat of the mule is thought to cause the lighting to strike. We are glad to welcome MR.& MRS. C.M. CHANDLER [Watchmaker] back to Spartanburg. ALLEY, town Marshall has been at work again among the evil-doers.Two cotton theives brought into town for stealing a bale of cotton from MR. FLOYD near Reidville. MR. JOPLIN is expecting a lot of horses and mules to arrive next week at prices from $5.00-$100. COL. H.H.THOMPSON has his house and 20 bales of cotton on Broad River, York Co. on the 20 th burned. Fire of originition by the breaking of a lantern. OBITUARY [April 10, 1876] L.BELL was born Feb. 11, 1874 and died June 24th, 1875. ALONZO L. BELL was born June 1, 1857 and died Jan. 20, 1876. They were the children of MALINDA BELL, the 2nd wife of Noah Bell. We learn that Wm. IRWIN, Esq., of the United States Revenue {License} Dept., has been ordered to locate his headquarters at Seneca City. There are 3,000 white men in the state of Florida who have not voted since the downfall of the Confederacy- enough to ensure a Democratic triumph at every election. We are pleased to meet in town on Monday, GEN. ALFRED AUSTELL of Atlanta, one of Georgia's most successful financiers. The General is on a short visit to his old friends, in his native county. "There are fifteen cotton factories now in operation in the State- True, and nearly half of these are located in Spartanburg"- Exchange. Judge MACKEY , of Chester Dist. to succeed the present encumbeat, MR. A.S. WALLACE. TAXES PAID Edgefield Co. pays $ 88,000,while Abbeville pays $ 123, 400. BOMAR runs a chebang in rear of our office that he calls an Atelier, we don't know exactly what that means, but we do know he has an enormous stock of furniture from cheap pine to costly French burr walnut, all graded to suit these hard times. The first"swarm of bees" of the season came from the hive belonging to MRS.WHITE near Glenn Springs this week, that is early for February. MR. JOHN E. BRYCE is having a new cottage built on Church Street near MAJ. KIRBY'S. MR. J. MILES LEE , contractor,is putting up a confortable two-story house for MR. W.P. IRWIN on Church Street just beyond MR. J.Y. GOODLETT'S. MR. R.W.BIRD has started a dray wagon & he is prepared to transport freight to & from the Depots. Just leave orders at the store. The accident burning of the boarding house at Hurricane Shoals a short time since has been , we are glad to learn, but a slight loss to the company and will be soon replaced by a better building. TOWNSHIP MEETINGS NEXT SATURDAY Remember that public meetings are held in every Township on every Saturday for the purpose of organizing Clubs.....
