Greenville Mountaineer; May 1, 1840

Died at residence near Nazareth Church in Spartanburg District on 20 April, Mr. 
Wm Caldwell, 80 years.  Native of Ireland removed to SC in infancy and for 70 
years lived in Spartanburg District...later part of Revolutionary War he was an 
active and efficient soldier, seeking always the point of danger and of benefit 
in the cause of his country and with his dauntless companions Collens, Hanna, 
Morrow and others, the intrepid followers of Pickens, goaded the British Tories 
and Indians throughout the upper country...
