Will Book B, Page 26 Written: October 20, 1817 Recorded: August 30, 1822 Will of Thomas Moore I Thomas Moore of Spartanburgh Destrict in the State of So. Carolina Being in perfect health & sound memory. Do this 20th day of October, in the year of our Lord 1817. make, ordain & publish this my last will & Testament, in the following manner, that is to say. First I give & bequeath to my beloved wife Mary, one half of the plantation, or tracts of land on which I now live, Viz. Beginning on a black oke Corner (standing on the west wide of the Wagon Road opposite to my field the said black oke is also a Corner of John Millers, land) And runing from thence Eastwardly to a large Cherry tree (Standing near the River at a place called the high bank, at the uper end of my bottom field) all that part of my aforesaid inclusive tract of land, situate & lying above the said line, including my dwelling called Fredonia, I leave to my said wife during her life, or widowhood, And at her death, or marriage, I then give & devise the said tract of land to my son Andrew Barry, & his Heirs forever. I also leave to my said Wife, the following named Negroes, Dublin, Lucy (his wife) & their son Nelson, Davy, & Hanna (his wife & Nancy, one ox Cart, & a Yoke of oxen, one Mule & a work horse, all my stock of Cows, or horned Cattle, Hogs, & half of all my plantation tools, plough bridles, & giers, Hers saddle & bridle, all my household & Kitchen furniture, not hereafter bequeathed, & my Cochee, or four wheeled riding Carriage with my two carriage horses during her life, or Widowhood; at her death, or marriage the whole of the above named personal property shall descend to, & be equally divided between my sons Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Barry, & my daughter. Anna Maria, except such partes of the said property as is hereinafter excepted (towit) Should my wife think proper to Marry again, she shall be at liberty to retain & hold, her Saddle, Bridle & one horse, & one fourth part of the household & Kitchen furniture, which she may dispose of as she may think proper; she may also retain & Keep in her service, any two of the aforesaid negroes during her life & at her death the negroes retained by her & their increase if any, to descend to my said sons Thomas Jefferson Andrew Berry, & Anna Maria, as before discribed. Item. To my son Charles Hamilton, I give & devise my inclusive tract of land Called Berrygrove situate in Spartanburgh Destrict to him & his Heirs forever, And the following named Negroes Viz. Frank, & his wife Flora, Charlotte, Emmy, & Osburn their Children, & a negroe boy Named little Prince, one feather- bed & furniture, my Rifle-gun, a saddle & bridle, & a horse worth one hundred dollars, and one half of my wearing appearl, & one third of my Library of books. All which bequeathment is to be to his use & benefit forever. Item. I give & devise to my son Thomas Jefferson, all that part of the inclusive tract of land on which I now live, lying blow, or South of the first mentioned line beginning at ablack- oke Corner, & runing Eastwardly to a Cherry tree near the River bank, to him & his Heirs forever. And the following following named Negroes Viz. Ned, & his wife Silla, & their two sons Ephraim, & Daniel, & a negroe girl. named Dinah. a Gray filley Saddle & bridle, my Gold watch, Sword & Pistols half my wearing appearl, one third of my library of books, the aforesaid bequeathment to be to his benefit forever. Item. I give & bequeath to my daughter Margret Roddy, in addition to the portion which she has already received, a negroe man named Tom, a set of Smiths tools now in Majr John Roddys pofsefsion, & twenty five dollars which I lent her husband John Roddy. Item. I give & bequeath to my daughter Violet Barry, in a addition to the portion which she has already received, a negroe man named Preamis. To my Daughter Patsey Benson. I give & bequeath in addition to the portion she has already received a negroe man named Sam. Tho. Moore Item. I give & bequeath to my Daughter Rachel, in addition to the Negroes she has already received as a part of her portion a negroe man named Will, & a boy named Grandison, a fether-bed & furniture, her Saddle Bridle & a bay horse Called burton,. To my daughter Betsey, I give & bequeath in addition to the negroes she has already received as a part of her portion a negroe boy named Simon, a feather bed & furniture, a gray-Mare saddle and bridle. Item. I give & bequeath to my Daughter Anna Maria, the following named negroes Viz. Cafsey, & her daughter Polley, Harry & Charles, and a Piano-forte. all which bequeathments is to be, to their several uses & benefits forever. Item, I give & bequeath to my son Andrew Barry, The following named negroes, Viz: a Negroe woman named Phillis, a boy called little Ned, John & little Davy, one third part of my Library of Books, my large portrait, or likenefs in a guilt frame, & my Gold sleeve-buttons, To his use & benefit forever. Item, Allow my Executors to Sell my clock, Gigg & harnefs, waggon, one ox Cart & a yoke of oxen, my [illeg.], Stills, all my unbequeathed horses, & plantation tools, the cotton that may be on hand, or growing, for the purpose of paying my debts, & placing sustable head stones on the graves of my first wife, My Daughter Polly Smiths, my son John Prices, & Mr. John Prices, & the legacies herein named: if the amount of the sales of the above property is not sufficient for the above named purposes, then I allow my Executors to appropriate for that purpose my out standing debts, or so much of them as will be sufficient. The remainder of my estate not herein bequeathed, Including one thousand five hundred dollars of United States seven percent Stock & one thousand eight hundred & seventy five dollars of of Mifsifsippi stock, for the purpose of giving my two sons Thomas Jefferson & Andrew Barry, a clafsical education And my daughter Anna Maria such education (as will enable her to make a respectable figure in society) and science, as are generally taught in the best female Academies, All which bequeathments & remainders are to be to their several uses & benefits for ever. Item, The crop of corn & wheat on hand, or growing, I allow for the use of the family, & not to be considered as afsets in the hands of my Executors. Item. Thereby Constitute, ordain, and appoint, my Brother Doctor Andrew B. Moore, gurdian for my two two sons Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Barry, & my Daughter Anna Maria, with full & ample power to manage their Estates, & superintend their education I do hereby consitute & appoint my beloved wife Mary, Executrix, Dr. Andrew B. Moore, & Charles Moore Executors of this my last will & Testament, hereby revoking all other wills by me heretofore made. In Witnefs whereof I have hereunto Set my hand & seal the 27th day of Octr. 1817.
