Respectfully returned to Comptroller's Department State of Texas Austin with the information that S.C. MOORE Pvt. enlisted June 24, 1861 to 8 April 1862 at Sumter, shown also Ridgeville, as of Capt. Alexander Colclough's Co. 2 Regt. S.C. Vols. which Co. subsequently became Co. D. 9 Regt. S.C. Inf and muster roll for Dec 31, 1861 (last on file) shows him "Present". He afterward served in Co. E. Palmetto Regt. Sharp Shooters, S.C. which organization was organized April 16, 1862 and he is shown: "Present" on the First two muster rolls (one for April 16 to 30 and the other for May & June, 1862 (the only ones on which name appears) Other record shows that he enlisted to 8th April 1862 and is entitled to discharge by reason of Act. of Congress passed April 16, 1862 and by order Col. Moore Conrdg 2 Brigade. On July 25, 1862 he signed a receipt for pay from May 1, 1862 to July 25, 1862. Endorsement on the receipt shows: "Voucher no. 2 Discharge for S.C. MOORE Paid 25th July 1862" Nothing later found. P.C. HARRIS The Adjutant General In this application for "Widows Pension", two witnesses from South Carolina, J.A.M. CARRAWAY & W.H. FLOYD gave their testamony on S.C. MOORE. The State of South Carolina County of Florence Before me M.D. Myers, Notary Public of Florence County, State of South Carolina on this day personally appeared J.A.M. Carraway and W.H. Floyd, who personally known to me to be creditable citizens, who, being by me sworn, on oath state that they are personally acquainted with the forgoing applicant, and that the facts set forth and statements made in her application are correct and true, to the best of their knowledge and belief, and that they have no interest in this claim. And further make oath to the following facts touching the service of the applicant's husband in the Confederate Army: (State fully your source of knowledge). That the applicants husband was a bonified soldier in the War between the States, that he belonged to Company D 9th regiment Infantry, S.C.V. and served until end of the war. During his service in said war he served in Company E Palmetto Sharp Shooters, having been transfered to this department. Direct Interrogatories to be Propounded to Witness.............. Int. 1. ALL HIS LIFE, BOYS TOGETHER IN S.C. Int 4. Do you personally know that the said S.C. MOORE enlisted in the service of the Confederacy, and performed the duties of a soldier or a sailor? YES Int 5. Do you personally know in what company and regiment the said S.C. MOORE enlisted and served in the Confederate Army? When? Where? And the time of service? If you personally knew and so have stated that he enlisted and served in the Confederate navy, the state: When? Where? And how long he so served? APRIL 8th 1861, FT. SUMTER S.C. , SERVED TILL END OF WAR (INFANTRY SERVICES) Int 6. Do you personally know that S.C. MOORE was commissioned as an officer directly by the President of the Confederate States? What was his rank and line of duty? NOT COMMISSIONED Int 7. Do you know further if S.C. MOORE was, under the provisions of the conscript law, detailed for any kind of special service in the field, shops, armories, etc., of the Confederacy? What was the nature of his service, and how lond did he serve? HAD NO DETAILMENT AT ALL Samuel Chandler Moore was born in Sumter, S.C. 27th April 1844, the son of James Moore & Margaret "Hester" (last name unknown). Samuel "Sam" married Julia C. Cole the 26th of January 1875 in Clarendon county, S.C. Julia was the daughter of John Cole & Jannet B. Hickson, and grandaughter of John Cole and Axsha Newman. Samuel & Julia Cole migrated to Texas after their fourth child was born in 1883. Samuel & Julia are buried in the Prarie Springs Cem in Van Zandt County, Texas. Samuel died the 17th of May 1909 and Julia died the 29th of April 1936.
