He was born in 1775 and died 1854. The Will was filed 7 June 1854. He was either born in Sumter District, SC or Edgecombe County, NC and came to SC as a young child. He married Frances Davis, daughter of William Davis and Elizabeth Fort, before 1800. They had four living children at the time of his will. He also had seven sons with Mary Wise of Sumter District, SC. These sons were provided for in the following Deeds of Gift. This will was transcribed by Faye L. Dyess. The original is on file at the South Carolina Archives. A copy of the original is in the possession of Faye L. Dyess. 8 September 1851 South Carolina Sumter District IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I, John Hodge of Sumter District (Planter) being of sound and disposing mind and memory do make and ordain this as my last will and testament in manner and form following viz.- First: It is my wish and desire that all my property both real and personal remain in the hands of my executors here in after named until all of my just debts are paid. Item: I lend to my wife Frances Hodge the following Negros viz.- Nora, Jude, and her two children (little Phillis and little Anthony) Ola Phillis and Ola Dinah with their future increase and issue during her natural life and at her death to be equally divided among the living children of James D. Hodge, Benjamin R. Hodge and Harriet T. Thigpen to share and share alike. Item: I give to my Granddaughter Martha F. Hudnall one Negro girl so named Hannah together with her future issue and increase forever. Item: It is my will and desire that all the Rest Residue and Remainder of my Negros not already disposed of be equally divided among my living Grandchildren The children of James D. Hodge, the children of Benjamin R. Hodge and the children of Harriet T. Thigpen. But should any one of said Grandchildren die after receiving their portion or part of said property then and in that case it shall return and be equally divided among my surviving lawful Grandchildren share and share alike. Item: It is my will and desire that my land viz.- the John Clark tract lying on the Mount Hope Road the Jesse Hicks tract on the said road and the Meredith Hicks tract on the Mally Brogdon be equally divided among my living lawful issue James D.Hodge Jane E. Hudnall, Benjamin R. Hodge and Harriet T. Thigpen share and share alike. Item: It is my will and desire that all my stock of Horses, Cattle, Hogs, Sheep and goats be sold and the proceeds be applied to my just and lawful debts as maintained in the first item above and should there be an overplus of money remaining after paying said debts. It is my will and desire that said overplus be equally divided among my children James D. Hodge, Jane E. Hudnall, Benjamin R. Hodge and Harriet T. Thigpen, Lastly: I nominate constitute and appoint my son, James D. Hodge and my friends Gabriel Plowden and John Conyers as executors to this my last will and testament in witness there of I have unto set my hand and seal this 8th day of September one thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty One.
