Contributed to The USGenWeb Archives by: Jane Williams 27 Apr 2000 ---------------------------------------- Samuel Otterson was born on 1 April 1754, Tyger River, Berkley District, South Carolina (now Union County); died 11 September 1837 at Union, Greene County, Alabama; married Ruth Gordon about 1777 in Berkley District. She was the daughter of Thomas Gordon and Elizabeth, his wife, of Newberry County, South Carolina. Samuel Otterson entered the South Carolina Militia with the rank of First Lieutenent in Captain David MacKee's Company, June 1776. He served with his brother-in-law, Captain Govin Gordon. During the war Samuel Otterson was on an expedition against the Cherokee Indians, the Ring fight, Ramsour's Mill, Rocky Mount, Blackstock's, Story's Fort, scouted for Col. Morgan at the Battle of Cowpens, captured a number of fleeing British soldiers and marched them as prisoners of war to join Col. Morgan's army. Otterson was promoted to Major in the South Carolina Militia by the end of the war. After the war he lived in Union County. He was sheriff of Union County from 1809 to 1812. About 1821 he moved with a large number of extended family to Greene County, Alabama. His Revolutionary War Pension File numbers are S25344 and S32424, National Archives. Jane J.
