The following petitions are found in the Council Journal entry for 7 August 1753(South Carolina copy)Volumn 21,Part2,pages 565-571.The meeting of 7 August 1753 was the first meeting of the Council after the arrival of the above mentioned ship on 22 July 1753. The Humble Petition of George Jones,William Hamilton,William Watson, John Jessop,Archbald Watson,and Edward Flinn,in behalf of themselves and Familys. SHEWETH That your said Petitioners being Protestants born in Ireland have been Encouraged by the Provisions made by the Legislature of this Province to poor Protestants who should come and settle on his Majesty's Lands to transport themselves and familys at a very great Expense from their Native Country,with a Design to Sit Themselves Down in the Back parts of the said Province,where they hope they will approve themselves to your Excellency and Honours as Dutyfull and Loyal Subjects,to his Majesty and in time become to assetts to this his Province. That not finding a passage Directly to Carolina from Ireland,they were Obliged to go to England and from thence to Embarque with Cap't Muir for Philadelphia and so from thence to Charles Town. That their Indirect way of Coming into this Province has Drained them of what little Money they could scrape together and that they are not in Low and Necesitous Condition. That they trust that they are such Persons as are within the Meaning and Letter of the Act of Assembly Lately Pass'd for the Encouraging Protestants to come and Settle in this Province. That the aforesaid George Jones's Family Consists of his Wife,and his Mother Elce Jones.The said William Hamilton's of his Wife and one Child.The said William Watson's of Himself and Wife.The said Archibald Watson's of himself,Wife and Two Children.The said Edward Flins,of himself,Wife and Two Children.And the said John Jessops,Family of Himself and Wife. May it therefore Please your Excellency and Honours to take the care of your Poor Petitioners into your Serious Consideration,and out of the Fund Appropriated for that Purpose to Allow your Petitioners the Bounty usually bestowed on Persons in their Circumstances and Condition as without they Cannot Execute the Purposes intended by them in Coming into this Province.And also to grant unto them Warrants Directed to the Surveyors General for Running Out and Admeasuring into them respectfully fifty acres of his Majestys Land on the Wateree River or between the said river and the Congaree River in the Province aforesaid,for each person in their families as aforesaid agreeable to his Majestys Instructions and to grant unto them such of her releif and Assistance as to your Excellency and Honours shall in your Wisdom think Just and Reasonable.And your Petitions as in duty Bound Shall over Pray &Signed/ George Jones,Edward Flinn,William Watson,John Jessop,Archibald Watson,William Hamelton.The Prayer of the Petition being Granted Agreeable to the Bounty Act passed in October One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty Two.
