Was a volunteer.” “In the year 1779, he was at the taking of Friday’s Fort, the detachment being commanded by General Sumter and Colonel Lee. As well as he recollects, he was in service this occasion as a volunteer soldier about 6 weeks.” “In the same year he served 3 months at Orangeburg under the command of Colonel Moffett and Captain John Henderson. On this occasion he was a volunteer.” “In 1781 he served a 3 months tour in the Forks of Edisto, SC under the command of Captain Henderson, the plantation of Mr. Young being headquarters, and was employed in procuring cattle for General Greene’s army. He was now also a volunteer.” “The next service was for 3 months. Marched from York; passed Sherer’s Ferry, Broad River opposite Winnsboro and next to ?Sumner’s Mill in Newberry under the command of Sumter and Captain John Cunningham. During this time there was a slight engagement with a scouting party of the British at the Fish Dam Ford; afterwards another skirmish at Blackstock’s, Newberry District, with the British, where General Sumter was wounded.
