A. Ogle & Co, Chicago, IL This is to add additional information and clarify information in the Charles Breidenbach Biography published by G. A. Ogle & Co, Chicago, 1899, pages 606- 607. Charles Breidenbach married his first wife, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bonacher, in Warren, Ohio, 8 April 1869 (Tumbull County Ohio Marriage records). Elizabeth Bonacher was born 10 February 1844 in Germany and came to America in 1867 (obituary). Their first child, Catherine was born 28 November 1869. U.S. 1870 Census shows Charles, “Lizzie” (wife Elizabeth) and Katie (6 months) living in Warren, Ohio. On 22 February 1871, their second child, Elizabeth was born in Warren, Ohio (Family Bible entry no public record found). In 1872 Charles and family moved to Sharon, Pennsylvania. While in Pennsylvania, 3 sons were born as noted in a family Bible. Mercer County Courthouse, Sharon Pa, has no record of these births: 3 October 1873, Charles F. Breidenbach 22 November 1874 Frederic was born and 18 February 1877 son Louis was born. In 1879, Charles files a claim for a land grant in Aurora County, Firesteel township, South Dakota (www.glorecords.blm.gov). As a side note, his brother, Jacob Breidenbach also files and receives land grants for Aurora County, Firesteel township. In 1880, he moves his family of 5 children and wife to Aurora County to occupy the land he was granted. Later newspapers indicate that Elizabeth Breidenbach "enjoyed the distinction of being the first woman to establish permanent residence in Aurora County." In 1882, a post office was established in Firesteel Township and Charles Breidenbach was the first postmaster. He held this position until 1887 (Dakota Collector Society, January 2005). On 19 June 1886, Mary Anna, their sixth child was born in Plankinton, South Dakota (Family Bible entry). There is no record at the Aurora County Archives of this birth. In 1890, Elizabeth (wife) filed for and was granted a divorce. She received custody of their minor child, Mary Anna. Charles was given custody of the 3 sons, Charles, Frederic and Louis (Aurora County court records). Daughter Elizabeth had married John H. Saville in 6 October 1889 and therefore not mentioned in the divorce. No record can be found of when Catherine died. Following the divorce, in 1896, Elizabeth married John Shafer. She died 20 January 1921 (newspaper obituary). Some time thereafter, Charles met and married Barbara A. Helwig. No record of the marriage could be found, however, the U.S. Census dated 1 & 2 June 1900 lists Charles Breidenbach, Barbara (wife) and son Charles age 26 as living together in Aurora County, Firesteel township. Charles and Barbara continued to live in Firesteel until late 1900 when they moved to Mitchell South Dakota. . There were no known children from this marriage. Barbara died in 26 August 1904, and is buried in Graceland Cemetery, Mitchell, South Dakota. In 1915, Charles moved to Rapid City where he lived with his son Charles F. Breidenbach until his death on 22 June 1928. He is buried with his second wife, Barbara in Graceland Cemetery, Mitchell South Dakota (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sddaviso/cgracelndcem.htm File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/sd/aurora/bios/breidenb294gbs.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/sdfiles/ File size: 3.8 Kb
