The copy was written by the persons themselves and typed for publication by members of Pleasant Lake Alumni in charge of the anniversary. Copy was planned and typed on stencils as received. This accounts for the fact that names in the directory and news items are not alphebetized. Spaces have been left for the reader to make notes. The index is provided for you to locate names. EARLY HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL Taken from the 1916 files of The South Dakota Mail. On March 16, 1916, the Pleasant Lake school board called for sealed bids for construction of a school building and heating plant. Such bids were to be submitted before April 15, to B. H. Mullen, clerk. Old school houses in sections 11 and 26 were advertized [sic] for sale. These were purchased by Bob Gossard and moved to his farm to be made into a farm house. On April 20, 1916, the following article appeared: Bids were opened last Saturday for building the new school in Pleasant Lake Township. Ferguson and Archer of Plankinton submitted the low bid, $9,450, and were awarded the contract. The building will be ready for occupancy in time for the opening of school in the fall. The heating and plumbing contract was not awarded, the lowest bid being over $31,000. The board will consider cheaper methods of heating before making the final decision. The township has voted bonds in the sum of $10,000 for the new school house, grounds and other expenses connected with the project, and will fall short about $5,000. The board has authority to go ahead and secure the remeinder [sic] necessary through a loan, and they probably will do so, as another election for authority to issue more bonds would delay the work for another year. Members of this first school board were: President: John Yeadicke Clerk: B. H. Mullen Treasure: R. L. Gossard H. C. Mullen Arthur Harris O. A. Hague E. L. Cook In August, the South Dakota Mail reported that Dwight Baughman had been hired as principal, with Anna Moon and Miss Gilmore as assistants. Since building progress was slower than expected, the school will not open until the latter part of next month. Some of the first students say that the school opened in October.
