Place the receiver to your ear and await the operator's request for "Number." Respond promptly by giving the number in the order printed, thus: seven, three call 3, for 73-3. Talk directly into and not more than an inch away ~ from the transmitter. After giving number to the operator keep the receiver to your ear until subscriber called for answers, or you are told "Line 1s busy", or "They don't answer." During conversation, should you leave the telephone, expecting to return, direct your correspondent to keep the receiver to his ear, otherwise when the operator asks: "Are you through?" and gets no response, she will disconnect you. To make calls in succession, give the usual one short ring signal to disconnect from first party, then place the receiver firmly to your ear and when you hear the operator say: "Are you through?" then give the number of the second party wanted. Non-subscribers will be cut off by central without notice. When through conversation the calling party only should ring off by giving one short, quick ring. If you have difficulty in hearing, tell your correspondent to come closer to the transmitter. Limit conversations with operator to giving numbers wanted, and correcting, should it be repeated back wrong. Report all line and instrument trouble to No. 93. Special request is made, that all troubles be reported promptly. SPECIAL NOTICE All general instruction on pages 2, 3 and 4 apply alike to all exchange and rural lines listed in this directory.
