James Bordeaux, a Frenchman, filed on the present site of Wheeler, in 1868, and moved onto the place a few months later. His place became well known throughout the territory as Bordeaux's Ranch. He engaged in ranching and other lines of business incident to the steamboat traffic of those days, the latter being of no small importance since the Whetstone Agency was located across the river where a considerable number of soldiers were stationed. He remained there until 1876 when he sold out to N. B. Reynolds and removed to the Spotted Tail tribe, and later to the Rosebud reservation. Louis Bordeaux was his mixed blood son. One of his daughters became the wife of Fred Barbier, and now resides on Pease creek east of Geddes.
