Cuthbert Ducharme, better known as "Papineau" settled at Papineau Spring two miles east of Wheeler in 1857, where he opened a store and general supply house, but whose fame as a dispenser of hot grades of whiskey seems to overshadow his other qualities, unless it be the accompanying accomplishment of handling his gun with courage and skill. Rough crowds of steamboat hands, cowboys and other western rovers often gathered at his "store" and on at least one occasion he found it necessary (so decided the jurors at the justice trial) to send one of his customers to the happy hunting ground after a short altercation. Ducharme came from Canada at the time Pease settled on his "island," and lived near the spring until about 1880. The last we hear of him he was sent to the Yankton asylum as a patient. "Papineau" was at one time while here worth at least $75,000, but was beat out of it in one way or another.
