Amiable Gallineau came into this part of the country in the ‘40s, and roved more or less up and down the river. Joe Ellis describes him as "a fine pleasant fellow when sober, but a tough character and anything but amiable when under the influence of liquor." He had settled near Papineau’s Spring but later sold his rights to Gen. Chas. T. Campbell and went into the wood business on Pease "island," where he got into a quarrel when drunk with a Frenchman by the name of Boquelle the partner of John M. Cook in the wood business and, as our Joe says, "shot his head off with a shot gun." This crime occurred in the early 70’s for which Gallineau was tried at Yankton, but was acquitted. His wife was a Sioux Indian. He later moved on up the river and finally died at the Spotted Tail Agency. In this connection it may be well to recall old John Gallineau who also was here some years until killed by one Dupre.
