Charles E. Hedges bought a trading post at the Yankton Agency in 1862. Later he
bought the Northwestern Fur Company's store at Ft. Randall and also established
a trading post on the opposite side of the river. He was the most interested and 
influential factor in maintaining the early organization of the county. He was 
never an actual continuous resident here, but appears to have maintained a legal 
residence, for he appears frequently as one of the county officers. He continued
his business here until his death seven or eight years later.
