Jones came to Charles Mix county in 1873 and for some years was engaged in filling wood contracts at Ft. Randall. He and his wife settled on their present home farm in 1877, where he has since resided. Mr. Jones has taken a prominent part politics of the county since its organization serving as county commissioner, register of deeds, and other capacities as noted elsewhere. His determined stand and speeches for the people's rights in the territorial legislature won for him the sobbriquet of "The Charles Mix County Volcano." His son Whitfield Jones, born May 17, 1878 was the first white child in the old part of the county and his second son, Wm. J. Jones, born Nov. 19, 1879, the second.
