Randall as a soldier June 26, 1873 and three days later and three days later was ordered across the river to repair the government telegraph line. He was among those ordered to burn the Garden-Evans Black Hills train in 1875, and he and others got into serious trouble in trying to mitigate the severity of the orders but this offense was regarded more leniently later and he was honorably discharged in 1878. He then came to Charles Mix, proved up on his homestead in 1892 in Signal township in what is now the Gates ranch. He remained here until a year ago when he went to the Soldier's Home at Hot Springs.
